Hans Reudi Giger, the Swiss artist whose creepy, biomechanical artwork inspired a generation of science fiction filmmakers, has passed away after suffering a fall at age 74.

Giger created the Alien for Ridley Scott's classic space horror film of the same name.

He designed album covers for bands such as Emerson, Lake, and Palmer and Debbie Harry, and although he found lots of work as a set designer in Hollywood, he came to resent the Hollywood production process, disowning much of his screen work. In more recent years, his style, although critically panned, found much popularity among tattoo artists, which pleased Giger.
