THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: Trips to Mars, 1950s style

A short disney film showing 1950s concepts for trips to the red planet:

You've got to hand it to Walt. I can't imagine a more dedicated futurian, he acutally used his considerable industrial and media resources to plug this kind of stuff and make it really exciting and interesting and understandable for ma and pa kettle.

All that Apollo money that was "Saved" by prematurely cancelling the program (Only about 30 million bucks) went in to cheese subsidies for the state of Wisconsin, which, coincidentally, is where Senator William Proxmire is from.

Yes it’s good to know that we will be remembered for throwing away the universe for short term profits. The American Empire fell because the quarterly statements were not good enough for Wall Street and in the end we were just a bunch of greedy jackasses.

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

...to realize your people discovered the New World, but threw it away because the drapes didn't match the carpet or whatever. It's got to be rough to realize that America could have, should have, would have been yours, were it not for the short-sightedness of your ancestors. That's the feeling our descendants will have in the year 3069, if anyone remembers us at all.

It seems like the only chance to beat them is for some mega corporation to decide that they need to restart the moon race.

Man those ex Nazi scientists had some good ideas. I remember seeing a few of these Disney space movies in school when I was a kid. By the time the late 70's came a lot of us wondered what happened to all those plans we heard while watching Apollo go to the moon. I guess we just lost the will to explore or something because when I talk about what we should be doing in space most so called normal people look at me like I am nuts or something.

With India discovering that there is water on the moon the space race between India and China will heat up. It is a shame that they will do what we could have done twenty five years ago. And the high ground will be theirs when it should have been ours.
