REAL SCIENCE: Aloha Mars!

A couple of months ago, we posted an article about a contest to select a team of "gastronauts" to spend a few months cooped up in a habitat on the Big Island of Hawaii, trying out sample menus for a prospective trip to Mars.

Well, here's an update on how that's working out:

Along with trying out a variety of foodstuffs and preparation methods, the team is giving test runs to underwear and excercise clothes treated with antimicrobial sprays to help keep things "fresh" longer (not a bad idea when you're spending months in close quarters with limited access to water and soap) and trying out what sort of robotic "pet" will be most useful for alleviating stress and boredom.

So they're playing with toys, eating weird stuff, and not changing their clothes for days on end.

Sounds like college!
