The networks have recently decided on what to renew and what to discard for the 2012 Fall TV season. Let’s take a look at some of the genre shows on network television and how they fared.

First up, shows that are cancelled.

Alcatraz (Fox) – The show started strong in the ratings and had an intriguing setting. However both ratings and quality dipped, even lower than Terra Nova. Like Clint Eastwood, Fox also decided to escape from Alcatraz.

Awake (NBC) – Awake is one the best new shows of the current season. Detective Britton and his family are in a car accident. The son is killed. However when Britton closes his eyes, he awakens in a world where his wife died and the son survived. The show is on NBC so that hampered it. Maybe it could have found an audience somewhere else; nevertheless, it was a worthwhile show.

Chuck (NBC) – I never really got into Chuck but I am glad that after several seasons of “will they” or “won’t they” cancel, the show was given a proper series finale.

The River (ABC) – See my review here of The River. A decent show, but I understand why it was cancelled. There was some Netflix chatter, but it seems every genre show that is cancelled is being considered as a Netflix pickup.

The Secret Circle (CW) – I don’t know, maybe that is why it was cancelled.

Terra Nova (FOX) – The one with the dinosaurs. The show never generated monster ratings; however it wasn’t a bomb either. The cost of the show was what caused its ultimate demise. As with other shows, it was rumored Netflix was considering the show.

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) – Is this (still) a genre show?

Fringe (FOX) – Excellent news that Fringe will be back for fifth and final season. This is probably the best show on TV.

Grimm (NBC) – A darker take on fairy tales. This show has only gotten better as the season progressed. Renewal was good news.

Nikita (CW) – This is not a genre show. It is also the best show you are not watching, so tune in. Nikita was a Division spy, now she is working to take them out. It is exciting news that the CW okayed a season 3.

Once Upon a Time (ABC) – Fairy tale inhabitants are trapped in a small Maine town in our world. A decent show you can watch with the family.

Person of Interest (CBS) – This is a procedural with a twist. The show revolves around a machine that will spit out a number and it is linked to a person that is in trouble or causing trouble. There is also a nice mythology behind the procedural. Currently, along with The Big Bang Theory, the best show on CBS.

The Simpsons (FOX) – Hey it has aliens, spacecraft, time travel episodes, and a crazy scientist. This show is closing in on 25 seasons.

Supernatural (CW) – This is one of the (if not the) CW’s longest running shows.

Touch (FOX) – Kiefer Sutherland stars in this drama centered on numbers and their power. It is a decent show but sometimes has a hard time working as a continuing series.

The Vampire Diaries (CW) – The Twilight vampire craze continues.
