the big bowl game

hi there everyone. sorry for the gregor samsa-styled typing, but i hurt my finger the other day.

now, i know this is a science fiction website, and we don't really like to take time to discuss matters beyond the scope of our limited mandate. we talk about sf, politics, and conservatism, and sf conservatism and or the lack thereof, and sf politics, and occasionally when we get bored we'll talk about religion a bit. and of course when i've been drinking then i'll occasionally rail on about my limitless hatred for my highschool grammar teacher - filthy hippie - and my disturbingly detailed plans for world domination (hint: i never actually say which world, but it's probably not the one you think), but we seldom discuss purely mundane matters.

I'm aware that i'm way the hell off script here, but i feel it's important to get this off my chest: I just got done watching the big game, and honestly I could not be more enraged.

the puppy bowl has gotten too commercial.

there. i said it. you know, when this illustrious tradition started six years ago, it was all about niche counterprogramming for little old ladies and very small children. nowadays, you watch the game and it sickens you what they've done to it. they've taken the pure concept - puppies annoying and/or ignoring each other for two hours, and occasional bouts of incontinence - and they've tarted the whole thing up unconsionably.

seriously, do we need a halftime kitten show? or the stupid tailgate party? or live footage from the hampsters in the fake blimp? ok, i'll admit the blimp was kinda' funny, but those stupid bunnies as cheerleaders? that's just both kinds of gay. and those stupid commercial bumpers of the referee eating a twix bar?

seriously, what the hell? this is not what i signed on for. i mean, it *used* to be all about the puppies...

you can like sci fi and sports you know there is no law against it

Cynthia Stevenson: "Cliff, I'd like to go out with you, you know, once you get out of the service."

Cliff Claven: "Actually, there's no law against mailmen dating...it just tends to work out that way in actual practice."

ditto SF.

I *Was* just making a joke, however...

I enjoy Football immensely.  R3 has a block similar to my antipostapocalypticism regarding sports.  Eventually, he'll have an epiphany that will reveal the beauty of the gridiron to him; and it will be for the weirdest reason we've ever heard of.

No. No brilliant commercials, except maybe the Doritos Samurai one.  A couple of very good ones, but for once the game was better than the adverts.
