WHAT I'M DOIN' # 21

I use CDs as a timing mechanism: I put in a CD, I start a task, when the CD ends, I take a break from the task, then I go back to it and start another one. It's a way of keeping me noticing the passage of time and not getting to monomaniacal about whatever I happen to be working on. At the same time, I'm trying to get rid of some crap that I never listen to anymore, in some cases, crap I haven't listened to in decades, and these are today's CDs that didn't make the cut, and are now in the Goodwill bag:

Wrote up the review for classic Galactica that you read yesterday (Yes, there's a bit of a tape delay on these things), got rid of an Abney Park CD "The Death of Tragedy." The song "The Wrong Side" on there is really good, and I like the woman's backing and duet vocals, and I really like their cyberpunky stuff, but on the whole the CD bored me. I'd actually forgotten I had it, which is always a good sign to get rid of things. Once you re-discover you have them.

Also, I talked to Harlan Ellison on the phone last night about the interview.

There comes a time in every Republibot's life when he's forced to admit that even though he's been keeping a copy of Billy Idol's "Whiplash Smile" in his CD collection for 21 years, he's really never going to listen to it again. I mean, seriously, "Sweet 16" is the only good song on there anyway.

I also got rid of both of my Nouvelle Vague CDs (The first one and Bande A Part). It's a one-joke band, and while it's a good joke, I tired of it quickly.

So I'm reading "Flatland" by Edwin Abbot to my kids, and one of 'em suddenly says, "Flatland is a vertical plane." I stared at him for a moment, and the scales fell from my eyes, and despite having read the book many times over many years, I realized he was right about something I'd never seen before. The clues were all there - the rain falls from the 'north' and the flatlanders all feel a vague pull to the 'south', coresponding to our up and down. I'd never even bothered to think about this, I just assumed it was horizontal like a table.

WHAT I'M DOIN' # 16: Haircut! Twice a decade, whether I need it or not!

Republibot 3.0's picture

About four years ago, I shaved my head at midnight, January 1st, 2007. I was curious to see how much it would grow in a year. At the end of the year, I'd intended to get a normal haircut, but then I thought "I wonder how long it could grow before anyone complains?" So I let it go. Then I changed jobs, and no one really cared about my hair, so I decided to just let it ride for the novelty of it. My hair's generally on the long side, but I decided to pump it up from "Rakish n'ere do'ell," beyond "Hobo," beyond even "Civil War Re-enactor," all the way to "Aging Rock Star."

Boring day. Had to get up extra early for an eye exam, which was a bit awkward on every level because, well, it just was. I'm just off my rythm today, not sure why, and I even ended up taking a nap for like a half an hour, which never happens. Though I suppose it could be that "The Baja Sessions" by Chris Isaac wasn't really holding my interest. I think my Isaac mood is near-done. (I do love his cover of yellowbird, however.)

Uhm...less than a chapter to the end of the Sutin book aobut Philip K Dick. I think I'm falling out of love with the subject.
