Review:"The Phantom" (SyFy, 2010)

Okay, the Phantom isn't exactly within our mandate. He's more pulp than Science Fiction, but he's got a couple of things going for him that scoot him in under the radar as far as I'm concerned. 1)He's a pioneer in the superhero genre, being the first 'long underwear' type, predating Superman by a year and a half. 2)The character himself is quite interesting, being a man who stands between the two worlds of mysticism and science 3)It's a pilot on SyFy, which means that we have to at least peek at it 4)It was on. The Father to Son legacy inherent in the Phantom mythology made this an oddly appropriate miniseries to air on Father's Day. Odd, because SyFy has shown itself to be particularly insensitive to that sort of thing. I'll have to assume it was an accident.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Stargate Universe: “Incursion, Part II” (Season 1, Episode 20,) SEASON FINALE

Republibot 3.0's picture

You know, it really wasn’t all that good. We were on a great run: of the last 12 or 13 episodes, with that one ‘dream bug’ episode, they were all good-to-great. Last week’s episode was a step down, but I forgave it as it was an intermezzo in a three-part story. This week’s even-less-satisfying episode is a cliffhanger that won’t be resolved until October, so, really, this one is *also* an intermezzo.

That’s one intermezzo to many.

Anyway, the Lucians still have the gate room, Chole and Eli are still lost, stuff still sucks all ‘round.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Incursion (Part 1)” (Season 1, Episode 19)

Republibot 3.0's picture

There’s a degree of parallelism between the three-part series premier and this three-part season finale. We’ve got most of the classic SG1 team turning up - Jack, Daniel, Sam - we’ve got the Lucien Alliance, we’ve got people traveling to the ship and things not going exactly as planned, and we’ve got problems with the air supply, and we’ve got yet another Icarus-like planet blowing up. Daniels’ even a cameo on a DVD, just like in the premier.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Subversion” (Season 1, Episode 18)

Republibot 3.0's picture

With tonight’s episode, SGU officially becomes the best SF show on the air. I’d even go so far as to say what they did tonight is superior to anything we’re seeing out of Lost at the moment, and that’s high praise indeed. This is also the episode where “Universe” finally took it’s own place alongside the previous two Stargate shows as an equal, as opposed to the frustrating departure from form it started out as. And best of all: no musical montages tonight!

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Pain” (Season 1, Episode 17)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ok, yeah, I’m just not feeling it tonight. We’re coming off a really solid five-episode winning streak for SGU, so I suppose we were due for a downturn. This is just a fumble, it’s not a complete failure, but, of course it’s not a complete success either and…well, I just kept waiting for the big twist that never really showed up.

Let’s All Take A Moment To Criticize Syfy

Republibot 3.0's picture

Today, let’s take a moment to reflect on what a bad job Syfy is doing.

I don’t do this out of hate, really, but just to point out some critical shortcomings. And hate, too, I guess. Ok, I do it out of hate, and the critical shortcoming thing. I hate, but I hate because I love.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Lost” (Season 1, Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I was literally on the edge of my seat through this whole episode, and not just because of my chronic back pain. I’m a pretty jaded guy. I’ve seen everything TV can throw at me at least half a dozen times by now, so it’s really hard to engage me in something, but this was genuinely tense, and I was really expecting an ending that I didn’t get, which makes the differences between this show and the previous SG series all the more striking and interesting.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Human” (Season 1, Episode 14)

Republibot 3.0's picture

It’s backstory city here on SGU tonight: We have two parallel plots running, the first, and more important being an extended semi-flashback in which we watch the things that turned Rush (A person) into Rush (An evil scheming jackass). In the other one, we’ve got a fairly standard peril-on-a-planet-with-the-clock-ticking plot. Both take a rather surprising turn, which is becoming the calling card for this series, and really has always been a trademark of the SG franchise, if we’re honest.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Yet Another Spinoff?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Syfy exec Mark Stern recently announced that the network may be seeking a second spinoff to the memorable, influential, buzz worthy, but ultimately not-very-good “Battlestar Galactica” series. This hypothetical series would be “Space Based” and possibly “Not a traditional series,” whatever that means.

So let’s have some irresponsible speculation as to what that means:

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Faith” (Season 1, Episode 13)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I’m still kind of struggling to find the best format for these reviews. Oh, sure, I could - and in fact generally do - slap together a recap, and tack some observations on the end, but that’s really boring to read and frankly pretty darn dull to write (Though I do enjoy the snark in some of the crappier series we review). I feel - in my case, anyway, I can’t speak for the others that write for the site - that it shows a lack of imagination, and also a lack of appreciation for the series themselves. Or at least the good ones, which deserve a little more insight.
