EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Deliverance, Part 2” (Season 2, Episode 11)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The deathwatch begins, each ping of the heart monitor bringing us closer to the last moments of this series. It returns to be burned off with an utter lack of fanfare, Syfy (“The Science Fiction Channel That Doesn’t Really Like Science Fiction”) has given it no promotion. In fact, if it hadn’t been for Scorpius mentioning it yesterday, I wouldn’t have known it was coming up at all. Thanks, Scorpy!

Gender Politics and the Feminization of Science Fiction [EDIT: Link Fixed]

Republibot 3.0's picture

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON 10/28/09

Someone calling themselves “Pro-male/Anti-feminist Tech” over at the Spearhead has written an excellent (if one-sided) article about the feminization of Science Fiction of late. You can read the whole bit here http://www.the-spearhead.com/2009/10/09/the-war-on-science-fiction-and-m... but the gist is that once the Bonnie Hammer regime began at the old Sci-Fi Channel, she began a directed program of ’feminizing’ Science Fiction in order to broaden the network’s demographics.

CAPRICA REVIEWS DELAYED

Republibot 3.0's picture

Science Fiction Uber-Babe Anne Francis died last night. Did Syfy decide to run "Forbidden Planet," or her episodes of genre TV shows? They did not. Did they decide to run a marathon of "Honey West" episodes? They did not. (Granted that show isn't SF, but it's no less SF than WWF Wrestling is, and a whole lot more fun to watch). So what *ARE* they doing?

BREAKING NEWS: Stargate Universe is officially cancelled.

Republibot 3.0's picture

If I love it, it will die.

Stargate Universe has been cancelled by Syfy. The largest and riskiest departure from the standard Stargate format has also been the only unsuccessful one. The announcement was made earlier today

There's also been a lot of twitter chatter about it

(Delayed) EPISODE REVIEW: Eureka: “O Little Town” (Season 4, Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Meanwhile, over in the (Slightly) less stupid corner of the Warehouse 13 universe…

PLAY BY PLAY

Sheriff Carter is bored, and buttonholes some kids into having to listen to his Christmas story:

The force field over Eureka is sketchy, and no one can get in or out. Carter can’t go visit his brothers in danelaw, and Zoe is trapped in town as well. But since she’s Zoe, this amounts to nothing, so we’ll just ignore her.

(Delayed) EPISODE REVIEW: Warehouse 13: “Secret Santa” (Season 2, Episode 13)

Republibot 3.0's picture

First of all, sorry for the delay. I’m basically off duty this week, and, well, you know. Stuff happens. Or in this case stuff fails to happen, I guess. In any event, this isn’t my normal beat, so bear with me if I miss a few subtle points.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Resurgence (Part 1)” (Season 2, Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

In the last three or four episodes this show has *FINALLY* come into its own. Ratings are even up by more than 100,000 viewers. Word of mouth is spreading. All this is good news, which, of course, makes me fear that slapping a mid-season cliffhanger/finale this close into its stride will kill all its momentum, the same way it killed Caprica. (Well, to be fair, it was that *and* a whole lot of incomprehensible writing that killed Caprica.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Visitation” (Season 2, Episode 9)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The up/down/up/down, but still generally rather pathetic overall ratings continue, with last week down about 50,000 viewers from the week before, and the previous week up about 107,000 over the week previously, which was itself down about 45,000 viewers from the weak before that. The numbers are hovering around one million a week, up a tick, down a tick. This is bad. Essentially, it means that MGM is paying about two dollars per person watching the show. A buck an eye, half off for cyclopses. Not as bad as Caprica, of course, but not far better.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Malice” (Season 2, Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

A slight uptick on the ratings, about 100.000 more viewers last week than the week before, but only up 62,000 from Cloverdale, and down 148,000 from the season high (“Awakening,” episode 3). Let’s face it, kids, ratings are in the crapper for this show. The producers were hoping for “At least three seasons,” they’ll be lucky to get past two.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “The Greater Good” (Season 2, Episode 7)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I’m a little concerned about the ratings on this show. The Season 1 (And series) high was 2.4 million (For “Air”) and the season 1 low was 1.17 million (“Incursion, Part 1”). In general, the ratings seemed to hover between 1.3 and 1.4 million viewers. Stargate Atlantis seems to have held around 1.6 million viewers on average per ep, just by comparison, so that’s respectable, if a bit disappointing.
