This just in--an astute reader brought our attention to the fact that a live-action version of the Japanese anime "Space Battleship Yamato" is up on YouTube in a fairly good quality version.
Recently I reviewed – in drunken, rambling, and poor fashion – the movie “Space Battleships Yamato: The New Voyage,” which was essentially a ‘reunion movie’ for the “Space Battleship Yamato” television series (Known in the ‘States as “Star Blazers). It was pretty kickass and entertaining, and so I was understandably pretty psyched about watching the next movie in the series, “Be Forever, Yamato” which came out the following year.
To be honest, I was rather disappointed. It just wasn’t all that good.
“Space Battleship Yamato: The New Voyage” is essentially a “Reunion Movie” that was made after the “Space Battleship Yamato” series had ended. In the US, “Space Battleship Yamato” was (badly) dubbed in to English, and was known as “Star Blazers.” In this bowdlerized form, the show was a huge hit with kids of my generation, who tended to get beat up a lot and were too old for “Battle of the Planets,” and too young for girls. The series ran for two seasons in Japan in the ‘70s.
