FAN FILM FRIDAY: Roundup: They're Made Out Of Meat

Usually fan films are based on a franchise; a TV series or a string of movies. Occasionally you'll get one based on a one-off movie or (increasingly) game. So it's somewhat surprising to find multiple films based on a single short story. Joine me after the jump and we'll look at four movies based on Terry Bisson's They're Made Out of Meat, which was originally published in Omni magazine back in 1990.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Roundup: Scientists

One of the things I love about fan films is the sheer abundance of potential source material. Star Trek and Star Wars probably inspire the majority (or at least a plurality) of fan projects, but we're increasingly seeing works based on less traditional sources like video games. This week I'll look at a couple projects featuring scientists.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Roundup: Nazi Mechs

Mechs, giant pilotable robots, were a postwar creation of Japan. They started to catch on in the west in the seventies and eighties with the introduction of Japanese animation. I must admit to some hesitation about this week's roundup. Partly because parodies of Hitler are on somewhat shaky ground to begin with, but mostly because the subject matter only partially extends into my usual beat of genre fan films. However, I find "Downfall Videos" to be the epitome of fan works in some ways.

Video gaming has claimed an increasing percentage of our entertainment dollar over the past decades. The industry now rivals movies and musice in size. Not surprisingly, fans are finding their inspiration as often in video games as the more obvious sources. Today we'll take a look at three fan films based upon the Portal games by Valve Corporation.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Roundup: Fan Trailers

Trailers are a popular format for fan films. They allow a fan to show the broad strokes of an idea in a short and accessable form, without the hassle of creating a full version. Recuts, which are made primarily from existing footage, allow all this to be done by one (very dedicated) fan entirely on his or her computer. Join me after the jump for three impressive examples of this genre.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Roundup: K.I.S.S.

One of the problems that fan film producers get themselves into is overreaching themselves. After all, the things they are fans of tend to have much higher budgets. Conversely, the most successful films are the ones that whittle down those big universes to a manageable size. Here are three very short films that manage to keep it simple.
