Robotech

MOVIE REVIEW: “Robotech: The Movie” (1986)

“Robotech” is a 1985 American series that is composed of three separate, unrelated early-eighties Japanese series. These were re-dubbed and slightly re-written to tie their narratives together into one epic multigenerational tale. It gets wildly derided by snotty fans of Anime, and deservedly so since it is, at root, a mutilation of original art, and kind of stupid as well.

Just a quick explanation of the concept here for our new readers, or for those who kind of lost track after we put Macross in hiatus back in May:

Back in May I did my last review in this series. Why? Because “The Democrats are back in the Whitehouse / So no one’s got no money no more*” and I just frankly couldn’t afford another disk. My new best friend and hero, “Robotech_Macross Guy” promptly informed me that the entire series was available on Hulu. I thanked him profusely, and said I’d get right on reviewing the rest of the series.

Sixteen weeks later I actually finally got started on it. I suck like that.

OBITUARY: Carl Macek 1951-2010

Carl Macek died yesterday. He was Fifty-nine.

While never a household name, Carl had a huge influence on my life in the mid-1980s, thanks to his role in bringing anime to the United States through his studio, "Harmony Gold." Anime had already been here, of course: Speed Racer, Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, and a few others had already stuck their toes in the pool, but they'd all been sanitized and dumbed down quite a bit in translation and editing, based on the presupposition that cartoons are *only* for little kids.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross: “First Contact” (Episode 11) AND: Robotech: “First Contact” (Episode 11)

This is the last Macross episode I’ve got on hand, and since the Democrats are in the Oval Office again I don’t really have the money to buy any more. This’ll be the last Macross/Robotech review for a while, but I I’m really enjoying the comparison/contrast thing going on here, and I fully intend to return to it as soon as possible.

We pick up our story just a week after Minmei’s sixteenth birthday, and just two or three weeks at the most after the Battle of Mars. Exactly how long the SDF-1 Macross has been in space is unclear, but it’s been several months, long enough for people to settle into a more-or-less accepting daily routine. The series never says, but it’s probably going on half a year by the time we get to this week’s story

There, see, that wasn’t so bad, was it? Only a week between reviews of this show. I should be able to keep up this not-at-all-breakneck pace for a couple more weeks, anyway. For those of you that are new, I’m simultaneously reviewing both “Macross,” a Japanese Anime from 1981, and “Robotech,” the somewhat bastardized American version of “Macross” from 1985. I’m generally using the American names for the characters because presumably our readers are more familiar with ‘em, and also they’re easier to type.

Sorry for the long delay since the last episode review from these shows, real life got in the way. Jumping back in to the saddle:

EPISODE REVIEW: Macross: “Transformation” (Episode 5) AND Robotech: “Transformation” (Episode 5)

It's a little tedious watching basically the same episodes back to back, but I'm really digging this project! It's fun revisiting old friends and adventures from a quarter century ago, and then comparing them to a less bowdlerized version.
