EPISODE REVIEWS: Kings: "Goliath" (Episode 1)

Republibot 3.0's picture

You know, every once in a long while I look forward to something a whole lot, and it doesn't disappoint me. It's rare - my standards are high and my patience is low, and let's face it: most of TV is crap - but it does happen. It happened tonight.

"Kings" is good.

Well, at least the pilot is good. We'll see how the series goes, but based on this initial outing I have high hopes.

TV REVIEWS: Battlestar Galactica: "Daybreak, Part 1" (Season 4, episode 19)

Republibot 3.0's picture

After several months of cooling our heels in Earth Orbit, not doing anything, and after several weeks of randomly moving the scrabble tiles back and forth along the tabletop, but not actually progressing the story, suddenly we get moving again.

This episode was something of a format-breaker, divided somewhat randomly between the present and the past with an extended series of flashbacks.

TV REVIEWS: Dollhouse: "True Believer" (Episode 5)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This is a quandry of an episode. It's yet another stand-alone mission, yet while it doesn't feel like it's moving the (As yet theoretical) series arc forward, it feels somewhat less random than the spate of sub-par episodes that have come before it.

CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION BOOK REVIEW: "Rogue in Space" by Frederick Brown (1957)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I'm using the word "Classic" here in the sense of "Really old," as in "boring old classic rock" and not in the happier "Really good and influential" sense of the word.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE REVIEWS: "Babylon 5: Thirdspace" (1997)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I just watched “Babylon 5: Thirdspace” (1998) – A Made-for-TV movie (Oxymoron if ever there was one), I’d only seen this twice, once when it first aired, and once a year or so later when I was wracked with insomnia.

Republibot 3.0's picture

Hi there! Republibot 3.0 here, filling in for R2, who's had an unfortunate confluence of movie tickets and VCR malfunctions and hence can not be with us today reviewing this show, even though it's his beat. I'll be pinch hitting on his behalf, but he'll be back next week.

Today's episode was the second half of the two-part season finale. If you're not up to speed, R2's review of part 1 is online here http://www.republibot.com/content/tv-review-batman-brave-and-bold-deep-c... and if you are up to speed, here we go:

EPISODE REVIEWS: Dollhouse: "The Grey Hour" (Episode 4)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Hey, whadya' know? A month in to the run of this rapidly-dying muddle of a show and we finally got a good episode!

We start off in mid-mission with Echo as a midwife helping a couple deliver their baby amidst embarasingly bad dialog ("You mean she's going to be a lesbian?"), then we cut to deprogramming and Echo back at the Dollhouse hanging out with Sierra and Victor. Topher has noticed this, and attributes it to the herd instinct you see when flocks of birds turn on a dime, and not some kind of hidden memory.

(A Very Belated)TV REVIEW: LOST: "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" (Season 5, Episode7)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Owing to bad planning and entirely too much real life, I wasn't able to watch this episode until Sunday, and even then it was a struggle to fit it in. But I watched it, and I ended up being disappointed. There's little more annoying than longing for something for a half a week longer than anyone else, and it being pretty meh when you finally get to see it.

TV Review: Battlestar Galactica: "Someone To Watch Over Me" (Season 4, Episode 17)

Wow!

You know, it's easy to forgive massive missteps like last week when they completely knock it out of the park like they did tonight! Seriously.
