SOFTWARE REVIEW: Out of the Park Baseball

Robert Bee's picture

In Robert Coover’s novel The Universal Baseball Association, the protagonist Henry Waugh creates a detailed stats-based baseball game played with dice, similar to games like APBA and Strat-O-Matic that many of us played as kids and beyond. He creates entire seasons with his eight-team league, keeping intricate statistics for the players and teams. He imagines back-stories and personalities for his players, serving as the league’s official historian as he records reams of articles and pages.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Babylon 5: “Grail” (Season 1, Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I’ve generally praised B5 for its willingness to break the “Religion Taboo” in SF, and treat it as an aspect of human psychology and society in its own right, just like love or music, which may not be true, but which doesn’t require justification. Alas, sometimes you go too far, and you…well…read on…

MOVIE REVIEW: In Time

Wil Avitt's picture

You can do a lot in a day. You can take your kids to the park and then out for some yummy ice cream, you can watch all six Star Wars movies in chronological order (I mean 1-6, not in the order they were made) or you can waste that day by sitting through a boring movie rife with anti-capitalist liberal propoganda.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Now You See Me” (Episode 9)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This was a pretty good episode which I will attempt to relate without revealing any spoilers like “Skye is the mole.” Despite the fact that Skye is the mole, and despite the fact that it’s revealed in this episode, I’m not going to say a peep about it. So read on content in the knowledge that this will be a spoiler free review, and that Skye’s “Special Relationship” with the plot will not be revealed. (She’s the mole. Did you know? I didn’t know!)

Sanctuary: “Fugue” (Season 4, Episode 8)

Charles H's picture

Is it Glee? No. Is it American Idol? No. It is Sanctuary: The Musical!

Sanctuary, a Syfy channel series, follows Helen Magnus and her team as they track and try to protect Abnormals, things not human or animal.

The show opens with Helen, Will, and Declan as they try to subdue an abnormal. Having no luck with normal stun guns, Helen goes for the Big Gun. The abnormal is stunned unconscious and turns into Abby Corrigan, FBI agent and Will’s girlfriend.

EPISODE REVIEWS: The Walking Dead: “Secrets” (Season 2, Episode 6) and “Pretty Much Dead Already (Season 2, Episode 7)

I was doing family stuff last week, so the final two episodes of the first half of Season Two (don’t you just hate split seasons?) are reviewed now. Together, they’re a slow burn with a gut punch at the end. This is a show about perspectives and reactions, which gratifyingly refuses to simply demonize anyone.

EPISODE CROSSOVER DEALIE REVIEW THING: Generator Rex: “Heroes United” (Season 3, Episodes 3 and 4)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Our Friday Night animation coverage has been a bit spotty for a few months now. I’m not entirely sure if we even cover either of these shows anymore. I know *I* don’t cover ‘em, but I can’t remember if somebody picked up Ben 10 or not. Certainly I’m not picking either of these shows back up, I’m well and truly, great and mightily burned out from the nights where I had to review four or five back-to-back-to-back shows. Just the same, it’s a crossover, so I thought I should at least note it.

So is Big Bang Theory laughing With you or At you these days?

Laughing at you, not with you.

I'm a long time fan of the Big Bang Theory, but, I'm afraid I have to report, it's really gone down hill since the third season or so. I deeply regret this,
because when the show started out, it was hilarious, but now I find there are several causes dragging its quality down.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Vs”(Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The Republiboy has announced that tonight is the last chance he’s giving the show. If this episode stinks, he’s done. Ratings were down about 750,000 viewers last week, but 400,000 over the week before that. Ratings are holding average around 8 million overall, which is probably a little disappointing for FOX, but probably good enough to get another half season like this.

We shall see.

EPISODE REVIEW: Terra Nova: “Proof” (Episode 7)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Two weeks ago the show finally got good, then last week is was right back to New Crap City. Despite the all-over-the-place quality of the series, ratings have been fairly consistent at about 8 million folks a week. Just a tick under. We are now in the second half of the season, make-it-or-break-it time. If they can hold around this level for the next six episodes, they will be back next season. If they can’t, they won’t.

Let’s find out if it’s worth the effort:

In fact, it wasn’t bad. Second best episode so far.
