RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Babylon 5: “The Quality of Mercy” (Season 1, Episode 21)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This is the penultimate episode of Season 1. It’s actually on a short list of my favorites, and one I’d probably show to people I was attempting to interest in the show. It’s also one that allows some of the B-list characters to get some time in the spotlight.

There’s a psycho killer on the station who’s been apprehended after killing two lurkers and a security guard. He’s found guilty in a trial, but since the Death Penalty isn’t legal in the Earth Alliance, there are only three options available:
1) Send him home to be imprisoned for the rest of his life

BOOK REVIEW: “Destroyer of Worlds” by Larry Niven and Edward Lerner (2009)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Some reviews are hard to actually write. I have no idea why. I liked this book well enough, but I realized this morning that I’ve been deliberately distracting myself from writing a review for like a week now. I rattled off a review for “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” in like an hour, but I’ve tried fifteen times to write one for “ A Wrinkle in Time” and end up just staring blankly at the page. No clue why this should be, but now that I’m actually typing, let’s see where this leads us.

BOOK REVIEW: "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls" by Robert Heinlein (1985)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Just a little capsule here, not my full length review, mostly 'cuz I can't bring myself to waste too much time on this one. Yes, there are a lot of entertaining ways to say "This is a bad book," but this book is *SO* bad that even making fun of it isn't fun.

It’s a day like any other on the space station: Garibaldi and Sinclair are eating breakfast in the mess hall. Ivanova - not a morning person - comes in very sleepy. The guys prank her:

EPISODE REVIEW: Sanctuary: “Sanctuary for None – Part 2” (Season 4, Episode 13)

Charles H's picture

The season finale of Sanctuary is here. Bloody hell, that was spectacular.

After Helen Magnus let the abnormal out of the bag, so to speak, SCIU (Specified Counter Insurgency Unit) offices are flooded with calls. Greg Addison, SCIU director, is promising his bosses that he will regain control of the situation.

Will Zimmerman takes a call from Magnus. She tells Will they need to stop Addison’s plans. Will is still not fully on board with Magnus as she won’t disclose her entire plan to him.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Babylon 5: “A Voice in the Wilderness” (Season 1, Episode 18 and 19)

On the one hand, I love two-parters because it means I get to write one review instead of two. On the other hand, regardless of the show, they’re usually rather padded out and it takes me twice as long to watch a story that probably should have only been an hour. This is both those cases

SATURDAY B-MOVIE CRAPFEST: “The Unknown World” (1951)

Republibot 3.0's picture

As with all good-hearted people who came of age in the 70s or early 80s before cable was ubiquitous, my Saturday afternoons were solidly anchored to my local Monster Chiller Horror Theater show. Every week some semi-comedic host would tell bad jokes or engage in sub-stooges-level sketch comedy while framing a particularly crappy horror or SF movie. I drifted away from this in the 80s when I discovered that having long hair and a guitar meant that women would let me touch them, but as soon as I was out of college I discovered MST3K and once again my life was back on its normal course.

EPISODE REVIEW: Sanctuary: “Sanctuary for None – Part 1” (Season 4, Episode 12)

Charles H's picture

The penultimate episode of Sanctuary sets the table for a nice season finally.

Feliz, the Sanctuary’s financier, comes to Helen Magnus and tells him he can no longer be her banker. What she wants him to do is too risky. She reluctantly agrees and asks him to shut down Wall Street for 12 minutes as one last favor. He agrees.

Will becomes cornered by some tough guys that are trying to hurt an abnormal. The Hollow Earth insurgency leader Caleb comes to his rescue. Caleb tells will he wants a meeting with Magnus.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Babylon 5: “Legacies” (Season 1, Episode 17)

Republibot 3.0's picture

You may not be able to judge a book by it’s cover, but it occurs to me that you can judge a Babylon 5 episode by it’s title, at least in the first season anyways. The good episodes have elaborate titles: “Midnight on the Firing Line,” “The Coming of Shadows,” “Signs and Portents,” whereas the ho-hum to lame episodes all have generic one-word titles like “Infection,” “Grail,” “Eyes,” “Survivors,” and “Born to the Purple.”

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Babylon 5: “Eyes” (Season 1, Episode 16)

It’s possible that I haven’t watched this episode since it first aired in ‘94. My oldest son says that I did watch it when we last went through the whole series about three years ago, but I have no knowledge of it. I remember the ep, particularly the ending, but overall my memories were pretty squishy, which is unlike me. Maybe I left the room, or fell asleep? I *do* know that this was one of those episodes that I tended to avoid in reruns, much like the Space Hippies episode of TOS. There wasn’t much there to hold my interest.
