THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: "All Around The Moon"

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ok, I've been slamming Von Braun pretty hard, calling him an Nazi Party Member and a Major in the SS, and some people have complained to me about dissing the guy who put us on the moon, and that none of that stuff doesn't matter any more than the current Pope having been an unwilling member of the Hitler Youth.

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: "To the Moon with Von Braun and Disney!"

Republibot 3.0's picture

Over the last couple weeks, we've been looking at Von Braun's space shuttle obsession, and Disney's eventual enthusiastic support of such a thing. So, ok, you've got a space shuttle. The obvious problem then becomes one we in the present face: "So you can get to orbit. Big deal. What do you do next?" Well, you go on to the moon, obviously, and here's former Nazi party member and SS Major Werner von Braun himself explaining his plan and how it'll all work, followed by a dramatization of a lunar mission. Part 1:

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: "Von Braun's Space Shuttles - Disney Style!"

Republibot 3.0's picture

Last week we talked about Von Braun's space shuttle obsession and our glorious dreams of a 1950s future in space. This week we'll look at some actual visualizations of that future, as seen by Disney studios.

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: "Von Braun's Space Shuttles"

Dr. Werner von Braun: Nazi Scientist, American Hero, Best Buddies with Walt Disney. Just a strange, twisted life which more or less encapsulates the moraly ambiguous middle-third of the last century, don't you think? But regardless of which side of the Devil/Dupe argument you fall on with von Braun, there's no arguing that the man was freakin' brilliant. So brilliant, in fact, that some people have claimed he was a time traveler from the future.

Happy New Year!

Ok, enough pleasantries, let's get down to business. Obviously, if you're a regular reader of this site, you're familiar with the concepts of "Space Habitats" like Babylon 5 et al. (And if you're not, here's a quick review: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_habitat )

As cool as trips to and colonies on the other planets and moons in our solar system may be, such habitats offer the best and safest hope of actually colonizing space. As much as I enjoy space exploration itself, Colonization is really a vastly more important goal, and the one that will have really long-ranging and profound effects on humanity and human civilization. Unfortunately, no spacefaring nation has ever even vaguely advocated this as a national goal, though the US has done several intensive studies of the idea, and I presume the Soviets did so as well. The most obvious and probably safest area to build one of these beasties would be in one of the LaGrange points ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaGrange_point ), ideally either L4 or L5, as they're the most stable. (L1 is semi-stable, L2 & L3 are stable on only 1 axis)

Christmas Eve Links

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ok, we haven’t done any links in a while, and as it’s Christmas Eve, this seems a fine place to use them to kill time until the Turkey’s done. We start out with Season’s Greetings from the Once And Former Dr. Who, who seems to have a weird obsession with spending his yuletide in the UK:

And after the jump, more stuff and things

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: The Manned Orbiting Laboratory, or The USAF gets screwed by NASA again...

Republibot 3.0's picture

Happy October, everybody. Last month I told you about how NASA screwed the USAF out of their super-cool X-20 project, in the process setting back hypersonic research by a decade, and condemning themselves to use their halfassed space shuttle for a generation. This was not the last time NASA went crying to mama (Congress) to complain about their mean older brother.

THIS USED TO BE THE FUTURE: The Spiral 50/50

Republibot 3.0's picture

Yesterday we talked about the USAF's abandoned space plane, the X-20 DynaSoar. Not to be outdone, the USSR wanted a one-man fightery space plane thingie, too. Their entry is below the jump. The CGI footage at the beginning comes from the old Dan Roam website, "Deep Cold." the rest is mostly archival Soviet footage of Spiral drop testing.
