Review: Toy Story That Time Forgot

Pixar's Toy Story franchise continues to impress with its high-quality animation, imaginative plots, and sensitive voice acting.  The latest offering in the series is a Christmas special, "Toy Story That Time Forgot," where the old gang of Woody, Buzz, Trixie, Rex, and Angel Kitty cross paths with a very intense tribe of Battlesaurs during a play date at a neighbor's house.

Time Story Story Time: The What If Scenario

While I am waiting to see what happens in the next issue of "The Star Wars," I got to thinking about how the world would be different if Lucasfilm had gone with the story as it appears in the original draft.  Personally, this story is so boring that I can't imagine that it would have made so much as a ripple in the pop culture, never mind the tsunami that "Star Wars" created.  The film would not have lasted the summer, and George Lucas would be known as "the director of 'American Graffiti.'"

MOVIE REVIEW: "John Carter" (2012)

John Carter.

It’s a venerable name in science fiction, largely unknown to the much vaster universe of consumers marinated in Tarzan at a young age. That makes its fate as a blockbuster quite uncertain (i.e., no Transformers guarantee here). Setting that commercial issue aside, however, what’s it like as a movie?

Chicken Little – Movie Review (**)

Republibot 1.0's picture

So it seems that the great philosophical question of my generation has become “What thinketh thou, Disney?” A lot of times this question comes paired with the popular discussion topic “The Wings of Pixar: Candle Wax or Real Feathers?” Both subjects seem to be generated by the apparent belief that Disney seems to think that Animation for Animation’s sake is all that matters. That they can slap the semblance of a story together, input the whole thing into a render farm, pop out a templatized feature length product and just by the simple fact that they epoxy their Brand name to it, it instantly should make it a quality animated film in the grand tradition of their storied past. While Pixar preaches “Story, story, story” (now whether that will continue to be true in the future is still to be seen…), Disney is all about the Brand. And that fact about Disney is nowhere more evident than in Chicken Little, the newest animated mass market twinkie from the Mouse House’s piece work animation assembly lines.

OUTSIDE OUR COMFORT RANGE: “Toy Story 3” (No Spoilers)

Republibot 3.0's picture

At root, the Toy Story movies have always been about identity. The first one is about how you deal with life when you realize you’re not as important as you thought you were: Woodie is no longer Andy’s favorite toy; Buzz isn’t *really* an Astronaut Ranger. The second one is all about how you deal with life when you realize you’re *more* important than you thought you were. This one is all about becoming more than the sum of your parts, transcending your origins and your experiences, and becoming something quietly grand, and about the consequences of *not* being able to do so.

MOVIE REVIEW: “Up” (2009)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Let’s just get this out of the way before we go any further: yes, I cried. Despite my right-leaning conservative status, I’m secure enough in my manhood to admit I was crying several times in this movie. I wasn’t bawling like a six-month-old baby girl or anything - and if I did, I wouldn’t admit it because I’m not *That* secure in my manhood - but there were definitely some water streaming down my face at several points in the movie. And there were several *other* points that my eyes were definitely stinging and my throat got kinda’ tight.
