The New Hollywood Moneymakers--Astrophysicists

Republibot 4.0's picture

A friend of mine alerted me to this bit of research which claims that Hollywood can be guaranteed blockbusters as long as they include an astronomer or an astrophysicist in the script.  Apparently, every film that's ever had an astrophysicist as a character has done really well at the box office.

And the piece is written by an actual astromoner, too!

Science Fiction University:The Purpose of Art: Part Eleven: Movies and Television

Charlie W. Starr's picture

Here near the end of this quarter long study, we’ve been discussing how to experience art: how to look at paintings, sculpture, and architecture and how to read literature. This week we look at how to watch movies and television. “But don’t we already know how to watch TV? Just grab the remote and press the ‘On’ button.” And that of course is the first problem.

WE NEED AN OFFICIAL REPUBLIBOT MOVIE CRITIC! WANT THE JOB?

Republibot 3.0's picture

We need an official Republibot Movie Critic.

Maybe that could be you? Basically the job entails you becoming an official (unpaid, but highly-regarded) staff member here on the site, with full blogging privileges. Your stuff will be read by hundreds of people every day, your opinions venerated (Or ridiculed, which is frequently the same thing), and you'll get to develop the elusive and enticing "Web Presence" that the kids are so hip on these days. In other words, we can help you build up your own name brand to do your own solo stuff with when you want to.

REPUBLIBOT WEEKEND MOVIE PREVIEW: Movies Opening 3-12-10

Republibot 1.0's picture

It almost felt like spring once or twice this week. It was very frustrating. Now I hear it is expected to snow next week. That is very disheartening. I blame Hollywood. Therefore, it is important to state that: I’ve not seen these movies, nor have I done any real research. I trust in ever faithful power of pop culture osmosis to inform my very clueless opinions. All of the film information presented here, including the plot summary, has been pulled from the Opening This Week page of IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/). This week we are previewing Green Zone, Remember Me, and She’s Out of My League, amongst others.

See you after the jump.

REPUBLIBOT WEEKEND MOVIE PREVIEW: Movies Opening 2-26-10

Finally! A half-way decent week for new movies. It isn’t huge, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. I was starting to feel like I was stuck in a Russian love story – one in which passion is demonstrated by not speaking to each other in order to avoid finding out damning information that you could trade to the government in return for the basic necessities of life. Ahhhhh, romance.

Boilerplate disclaimer: I have not seen any of these movies, nor have I gone out of my way to research any of them. I am just passing mindless judgment on them. All of the film information presented here, including the plot summary, has been pulled from the Opening This Week page of IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/). This week we are previewing The Crazies, Cop Out, and Defendor, amongst others.

Very well then – let’s get started right after the jump.

Ben stepped out of the elevator and faced his staff. They had been waiting nervously to hear the news from the Executive floor, or the Crystal Palace as it was referred to. He tried to smile reassuringly at everyone and taking a deep steadying breath he just dove in, “I‘m not really reviewing anything here. Unless stated otherwise I’ve not seen any of the movies in this ‘Preview’. I am really just thoughtlessly passing judgment on films that are scheduled to open this week and that I haven’t researched at all (not even a little bit). All of the film information in these previews, including the plot summary, has been pulled from the Opening This Week page of IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/). In this week’s installment we are taking quick looks at: The Princess and the Frong, Invictus, and The Lovely Bones – among others…”

The group started chattering urgently amongst each other, and then Ben dropped the bomb.

Banniston looked out over the world as it burned. The air was greasy from the smoke and the humidity from the water heavy air. His small gang of survivors stared out, the look of defeat on their faces almost palpable. He had no answers for them, all he knew was that they had to keep moving. Stopping was extinction, as long as they kept going forward, they would keep going forward. He coughed the black phlegm out of his throat and waved everyone over to him so they could hear his cracked voice, “ I‘m not reviewing anything here, so unless stated otherwise I’ve not seen any of the movies in this ‘Preview’. All I am doing is quite thoughtlessly passing judgment on films that are scheduled to open this week and that I haven’t researched at all (I was tempted, but resisted). All of the film information, including the plot summary, has been pulled from the Opening This Week page of IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/). In this week’s installment of the Republibot Weekend Movie Preview we are taking a look at: 2012, Pirate Radio, and Fantastic Mr. Fox – among others….”

A little boy, what was his name again… Miles, Milton… something… looked up at him, his face streaked with dirty tears, and then collapsed on the ground unmoving.

REPUBLIBOT THURSDAY WEEKEND MOVIE PREVIEW: Movies Opening 10-23-09

So, there we were, sitting at the red light, waiting for the green to come, revving our engines when Bob Falfa turned to me from his car and smiled. I tried to smile back, but my compulsive swallowing from barely supressed anxiety made it difficult to pull off with any sense of confidence. I nodded my head at him with what I hoped was nonchalance and said, “ I am not actually reviewing anything here, so unless stated otherwise I have not seen any of the movies in this ‘Preview’. All I am doing here is quite thoughtlessly passing judgment on films that are scheduled to open this week and that I have not researched at all (honestly, not at all). All of the film information, including the plot summary, has been pulled from the Opening This Week page of IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/). In this week’s installment of the Thursday Weekend Movie Preview we are taking a look at: Saw IV, The Vampire’s Assistant, and Amelia – among others.”

He grinned back at me, winked and then the light turned green…

THE REPUBLIBOT WEEKEND MOVIE PREVIEW – Movies Opening September 18, 2009

Republibot 1.0's picture

Before we get started this week, Republibot 3.0 wanted me to be sure to clarify up front that this feature is to preview movies that are opening this weekend and that unless otherwise stated, I have not seen any of them. So, don’t be too confused, I am not actually reviewing the movie, I am just thoughtlessly passing judgment on them without yet having seen them. In the interest of full disclosure I have pulled this list of movies opening this week from IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/) In this inaugural installment we will be previewing: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Love Happens, and Jennifer’s Body among several others.

So hurry and make the jump.
