Real Science: Curiosity Rover Finds Evidence of Nitrogen on Mars

Republibot 4.0's picture

Good news on the Martian front; after making a side trip to study some interesting rocks, the Curiosity Rover has found traces of nitrogenic compounds.  On Earth, nitrogen is usually of organic origins, but on Mars it was probably created by lightning strikes.  Either way, it indicates an increased possibility that Mars may have harbored life at one time, as nitrogen supplies the nutrients for life.

Real Science: Cloudlike Plumes Spotted In Martian Atmosphere

Republibot 4.0's picture

Some amateur astronomers have spotted what appear to be clouds in the Martian atmosphere--unfortunately, in 2012, but I just saw the news on it this morning--of a size and shape that baffles scientists and may force us to re-examine our conceptions about the Red Planet.

ORIGINAL FICTION: "The Taking Tree" by Kevin Long (2013)

Kevin Long's picture

The captain sat on a bench in a grassy clearing, looking at a huge tree, roughly a kilometer tall. He, and the grass, and the ridiculously large plant were inside an even more ridiculously huge geodesic dome a bit over nine kilometers across, and perhaps half that tall at its apex. There were smaller trees, plants, and flying animals, and bugs and rodents and bushes and walkways in there, as well as several of what appeared to be snack bars, though it was hard to be sure as they were buried under centuries of accumulated bird crap.

NASA Not going to Mars

kelloggs2066's picture

The National Research Council has reviewed NASA's plans to explore Mars and concluded it won't work.

From the Washington Post:

"The report makes a case for sending astronauts back to the moon. That had been a key element of NASA’s strategy under President George W. Bush. But President Obama and his advisers explicitly opposed another moon landing (“I just have to say pretty bluntly here: We’ve been there before,” Obama said in a speech on space policy in 2010)."

REAL SCIENCE: Happy Anniversary, Opportunity!

Republibot 4.0's picture

Back in 2003, NASA sent two robotic rovers to Mars to analyze the soil and look for signs of life.  The mission was supposed to last only three months.

It's been ten years, and one of the rovers, Opportunity, is still going strong.

Living On Mars, Right Now

Republibot 4.0's picture

This is seriously cool, gang.

Wanna live on Mars?  All you gotta do, is move to Utah!

The nonprofit Mars Society has set up an experimental research station near Hanksville, Utah, where volunteer crews can explore the potential living conditions of the Red Planet.

One of the Areonauts is Reuters photographer Jim Urquhart, who contributed some pictures for the linked article after being green-lighted to join the crew.
