Sorry for the long delay since the last episode review from these shows, real life got in the way. Jumping back in to the saddle:

EPISODE REVIEW: Macross: “Transformation” (Episode 5) AND Robotech: “Transformation” (Episode 5)

It's a little tedious watching basically the same episodes back to back, but I'm really digging this project! It's fun revisiting old friends and adventures from a quarter century ago, and then comparing them to a less bowdlerized version.

EPISODE REVIEW: Macross: “Lynn Minmei”( Episode 4) AND Robotech: “The Long Wait” (Episode 4)

As Hikaru points out, it’s really been a busy day. In less than 24 hours he went from being a 17-year old orphan visiting his old flight instructor at the launch of the Macross, to fighting alien invaders, to flying in space, to getting lost and trapped inside an unused portion of the derelict starship.

This episode gives us a chance to catch our breaths. Perhaps a bit too much.

We pick up exactly where we left off last week, with Roy flying back to the Macross. Hikaru is still catatonic on the ground, so Roy checks in with Misa to explain the situation - about Hikaru being a civlian, the mess-up that got him involved in the fight, and so on. Misa is furious. Roy heads back. There’s still a lot of fighting going on all around the island. Global and the bridge crew wonder why the aliens are toying with them - clearly they’ve got the firepower to simply destroy them and be done with it.

PREFACE

We’ve set out to go through the entire Macross franchise in chronological order here, and we just got through the first chapter: Macross Zero, a 5-episode miniseries which served as a prequel to the show that started it all, “Macross.” Whereas “Macross Zero” came out between 2002 and 2004, the original show came out in 1982/83.

EPISODE REVIEW: Macross Zero: “The Birdman” (Episode 5, 2004)

Episode four ended with Sara and Aires getting nabbed by the bad guys while Roy and Shin looked on impotently. This one starts out with the two of them being airlifted back to the aircraft carrier Askua, just off of Mayan Island. Meanwhile, back on the Anti-UN submarine aircraft carrier (Which is very cool!), the Professor continues to lecture the women folk about the evils of the UN and how he hopes to use the Birdman to offset the advantage the UN has from managing to nab the Alien Space Ship 1 (AKA the Macross) when it crashed in to South Antaria Island nine years before.

Since we've been away such a long time, here's a really good FMV I found to get us all back in the mood. Watch this and then we'll get to the review:

Freakin' beautiful, isn't it?

EPISODE REVIEWS: Macross Zero: “Blue and Desperate Battle”(Episode 3, 2003)

We pick up right where we left off, with Sara singing naked in the sacred pond, and stuff floating through the air. Sara herself seems surprised by this, then she realizes Shin is watching her, and covers herself more in annoyance than embarrassment. The rocks and things fall. She cautions him that the bonds between ground and rock are failing, as are the bonds between people, and soon the bonds that hold the world together will fail.

TV REVIEWS: Macross Zero: “The Stars Of The Surface” (Episode 2, 2003)

Republibot 3.0's picture

We begin with a clever recap of the previous episode, a montage with a voice over of the elder from the island village telling the story of the Water Humans meeting the Bird Humans for the first time, and the creation of Rooy Kanu, the first “modern” human. The Montage/Recap flows seamlessly in to the episode itself, and we see that the villagers are hiding in a cave listening fearfully to the story while Sara prays to the gods to protect them, Roy continues to fight the Anti-UN forces in the air over the island, reeking much havoc, and Shin runs to the lake to save Mao.
