DC UPDATE: What Are You Reading?

Wil Avitt's picture

This is going to be a short column this month, mostly because it has only been a so-so month in comics. We're in the saggy middle section of the New 52 inagural story arcs, most of which I expect to last 6 issues. I will say this, however, if Action Comics issue #7 rolls around and Superman is still running around in the jeans and t-shirt, I'm dropping that book. He should be in his Kryptonian battle suit in that title already. I didn't like the t-shirt look when they did it to Kon-El and I certainly don't like it on Kal-El, especially with the stupid cape tucked into his t-shirt.

EPISODE REVIEW: Green Lantern: The Animated Series: "Beware my Power" (Episodes 1 and 2)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Well, it's late and I'm cranky, and I'm feeling sorta' over-used and under-loved as it is, but pretty clearly no one else is gonna' do this, so I guess I'll review the premier.

PLAY BY PLAY

A Green Lantern gets killed by two Red Lanterns. Yeah, I don't know what they are either.

DC UPDATE: Coming Together

Wil Avitt's picture

Now that month 2 of DC's The New 52 reboot (man, I am REALLY starting to hate that word) is behind us things are starting to come together and stories are really starting to emerge. Superman is still rocking the jeans and t-shirt look over in Action Comics, Hal Jordan has gotten back his GL ring after it was taken from him and given to Sinestro, after Hal killed Krona at the Climax of the War of the Green Lanterns storyline and Superman has come to blows with Batman and Green Lantern in a DCU handicap match.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Roundup: Fan Trailers

Church's picture

Trailers are a popular format for fan films. They allow a fan to show the broad strokes of an idea in a short and accessable form, without the hassle of creating a full version. Recuts, which are made primarily from existing footage, allow all this to be done by one (very dedicated) fan entirely on his or her computer. Join me after the jump for three impressive examples of this genre.

DC UPDATE: The New 52: First Impressions

Wil Avitt's picture

Now that the first issues have all been released in DC's The New 52 line of reboots, and having read the first issues (at least those of the series I'm interested enough in to keep up with) my feelings are very mixed about the whole thing.

MOVIE REVIEW: Green Lantern

Wil Avitt's picture

Green Lantern is amazing. That's it, that's my entire review. Green Lantern is amazing, great and good even. It's probably the superhero movie closest to the comic book counterpart ever made. Go see it. Right now. Turn off your computer, go see the movie, then come back. I'll wait.

DVD MOVIE REVIEW: Green Lantern: Emerald Knights

Wil Avitt's picture

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is the DCU Animated Original Movie released on Tuesday to tie-in to the Green Lantern feature film coming out June 17th. It is very similar in format to the Batman: Gotham Knight animated movie (which was also a feature film tie-in for The Dark Knight) in that it is an anthology of several short subjects. It goes one better than Batman: Gotham Knight because it is actually a coherent story, which features several flashbacks. Batman: Gotham Knight was supposed to have some cohesion, but I didn't see it. This one really has cohesion, and I appreciate that.

OPINION:What Green Lantern Taught Me About American Exceptionalism

sysadmin 2.0's picture

While watching Green Lantern:First Flight the other day, with intent to review (That sounds almost like a crime: "Watching with intent to review")(in some cases, it may actually BE a crime), something kept distracting me. Not that it's a bad movie- that's not it at all- it was a very good movie that has something to say about the American condition.

THINGS WE'RE INTERESTED IN: "Green Lantern"

Republibot 3.0's picture

Wow. 150 million bucks, and they couldn't get someone who could do a better line reading than "Hal. This. Test. Today. Is. Important." Geez, it's Carol Ferris, she's an important character. They couldn't get a chick who could act?

Seriously: GL has always been my favorite DC hero - by a HUGE margin - and I'm overjoyed that he's finally, finally, finally getting some big-screen exposure, but this just looks...I dunno. I'm not really digging it.

FIRST LOOK: Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern

sysadmin 2.0's picture

I've been watching development on this movie for some time, and since the Green Lantern costume was to be 'virtual', I did not expect to see pics of Reynolds in the suit... because there is no suit. But that would be akin to not being able to publicize a Hulk movie because the main character is CGI- soo, I'm happy to eat my words on this one. I don't know if I'm happy with the 'costume', though. The good news is that any wardrobe malfunctions can be fixed in post production.  Click through for the pic!
