RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “Take the Celestra” (Story 16)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Much as I’m enjoying reconnecting with the original Galactica (And I am, brother, believe you me, I am), it’s hard to work up any enthusiasm for these last two episodes. The show has passed its creative peak (As of last week, actually), and this episode seems oddly out of place. There’s nothing you can point to as specifically *wrong* about it, in fact there’s a lot of good stuff in here, and it’s not like I’m not used to digging through crap to get to the diamonds in this series - I actually kind of enjoy it, truth be told - but this time out, somehow, it just doesn’t work.

EPISODE REVIEW: Stargate Universe: “Seizure” (Season 2, Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I love this show. I’ve always liked it, but as I’ve grown more comfortable with the characters, and as the producers have grown more comfortable with the idea that they actually need to engage the audience, I’ve come to love it. I’m not blind to its failings: it still cranks out the occasional clunker, the last two weeks were rather poor. It has a vision, however, and isn’t it nice to be able to watch a show that actually gets a little bit better as it goes along, rather than the endless batches of shows that peak early, and waste everyone’s time while they take forever to bleed to death?

EPISODE REVIEW: Sym-Bionic Titan: “The Metal Foe” (Episode 19)

Republibot 3.0's picture

As we speed towards the end of the season, there are a number of distressing signs about this show’s future. It disappeared from the Friday night schedule for months, then, when it returned amidst no fanfare it was deposited (Dumped?) on Monday Nights. Last week it was pre-empted from the schedule to make room for a Johnny Test repeat; the decision was so abrupt that there apparently wasn’t time to inform the various TV Guides, who ended up mis-reporting what shows were going to air that night as a result.

EPISODE REVIEW: Generator Rex: “Outpost” (Season 2, Episode 9)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I dunno, man, I’m just not feeling it. This episode had a couple interesting hooks and one interesting twist, and yet it just does nothing for me. Maybe it’s just that I’m all excited Nick S. wrangled us a really cool interview, maybe it’s just that I’m over-stuffed with Crab Rangoon (“The absolute best animal for Rangooning!”), or maybe it’s just that it’s a poorly plotted, anemic, badly directed episode with the worst fake Hispanic accent ever. You decide.

EPISODE REVIEW: Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: “Basic Training” (Season 2, Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

After beating up an illegal alien elephant (Which is just fun to say, and funner still to type, even if you’ve got carpal tunnel like me), Team Ben is summoned involuntarily to the Plumber Academy. Seems up to this point they’ve only had field commissions (Nice touch), and now they’ve got to go through formal training, or else they’re off the force. En rout they meet up with an alien kid named Tac, who idolizes Ben. As per usual, Gwen is taking everything very seriously, and Ben isn’t.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Max Headroom: "Body Banks" (Episode 3)

BleedingheartBot's picture

"Body Banks" is what Max Headroom's second episode should have been: a gripping science fiction yarn with a cautionary twist, unexpected surprises and convincing supporting actors. It's easy to forgive that the episode actually recycles an idea from the pilot in order to introduce an element missing from the US show so far: Big Time Television and its owner, Blank Reg – played by TV's jack of all trades, William Morgan Sheppard.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Stargate Universe: “Hope” (Season 2, Episode 14)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Six episodes left, probably no resolution to the story. Much as I hate Syfy (And I do, believe me, I do) and much as I blame this debacle on them, I can’t help notice the ratings on this show continue to deteriorate rapidly. The Midseason cliffhanger dropped fifty-nine thousand viewers between part 1 and part 2. The next episode dropped another hundred thousand. Last week (Which really wasn’t a very good episode) dropped another hundred and fourteen thousand viewers.

EPISODE REVIEW: Sym-Bionic Titan: “A Family Crisis” (Episode 18)

Republibot 3.0's picture

This episode was scheduled to run Tuesday night, but for whatever reason it was pre-empted at the last moment for some other goofball crap. They “Repeated” it today (Saturday), though really it was the first showing.

EPISODE REVIEW: Generator Rex: “Mixed Signals” (Season 2, Episode 7)

Republibot 3.0's picture

UPDATED TO ACTUALLY REALLY REVIEW THE ENTIRE EPISODE!

Rex is having siezures/visions during which he paralyzes a new bits of machinery build out of him. After several instances, he decides his nanites might be trying to tell him something so he just rolls with it and builds whatever the seizures tell him to. This results in a big goofy-looking machine which, when activates, incapacitates Rex and everyone else around, and brings an attack by a guy in a space suit.
