EPISODE REVIEW: “Ascension” (2014)

Ascension pissed me off.

There's a lot of good things and bad things about the first night of the series, but the thing that really pissed me off – and I mean, the thing that really, really, really pissed me off? It's that I predicted the ending, the bit twist, like two months ago when I first heard about this. “Oh, please don't let it be a variation on the JG Ballard story, '13 to Centaurus',” I begged, but, nope, that's exactly what it is. It's 13 to Centaurus on steroids, as a soap opera.

EPISODE REVIEW: The Legend of Korra: “A Breath of Fresh Air,” “Changes,” and “The Earth Queen” (Season 3, Episodes 1-3)

I’m probably not going to be reviewing this series because, honestly, I just kind of don’t like reviewing TV shows anymore. I don’t know why. Just the same, SOMEBODY should be reviewing this. It’s the best cartoon on TV, and at this point the Avatar franchise has provided five years of great entertainment. Four of them very solid, the fifth kinda’ ‘eh’ and very uneven, but still not bad.

EPISODE REVIEW: The 100: “We Are Grounders, Part 2” (Season Finale)

Kevin Long's picture

Ok, let’s get the gonzo journalist crap out of the way first: I have just finished reviewing two concurrent series. This one, and “Cosmos II: Armed and Fabulous.” Cosmos, obviously, I was disappointed by. This show I rather surprisingly enjoyed, though I wouldn’t care if it got cancelled tomorrow, or six weeks ago. Enjoyed, not loved.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “Unafraid of the Dark” (Series Finale)

Kevin Long's picture

If you’ve ever read Homer’s “The Odyssey,” you’ll know that it took Odysseus a full decade to find his way home after the Trojan War. This sets up an old joke that probably isn’t true: Once upon a time (1968) a review allegedly said that “2001: A Space Odyssey” had that title because it took it forever to get where it was going, and by the time you got there it was hard to really say the trip was worth it. Ouch!

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “The World Set Free” (Episode 12)

I’m feeling sort of burned out and I kinda’ don’t wanna’ review this show anymore. I mean I *WILL,* there’s only one episode left after this one, so it’d just be stupid to quit now, but I’m just not all that into it. A lot of that has to do with my basic outlook at the moment: we had a major illness in the family that required major surgery, which resulted in endless stays at, trips to, and trips from the hospital, all sorts of crazy hours, keeping the kids from freaking out, and so on, followed by a major out-of-nowhere crisis with one of the grandfolks, so I’m just sort of exhausted.

EPISODE REVIEW: The 100: “The Calm” (Episode 11)

Kevin Long's picture

Despite this show consistently improving, I find I’m never in the mood to review it. I don’t know why that is. Anyway, here we go:

ON THE ARK

It’s been several days since The Exodus Ship left, crippling the station. The power finally comes back on. Kane finds himself all alone. He wanders around, and finds some other survivors. They rescue the remaining crew in the control room, and then Kane crawls through a dangerous Jeffries tube to rescue some other survivors who ‘hunkered down and got lucky’ in the service bays. Among them is Clark’s mom.

EPISODE REVIEW: The 100: “I Am Become Death” (Episode 10)

Kevin Long's picture

Last week, as you’ll recall, the Space Family Robinson blundered into a war with the Grounders, while there was a failed coup attempt and a successful mutiny on The Ark. A dropship with Clarke’s mom aboard managed to cripple the space station while launching, and then crashed somewhere just over the horizon from the 100’s camp.

Actually, it’s more like “The 90” at this point.

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “The Immortals” (Episode 11)

Kevin Long's picture

Have I been too hard on this show? Last week, for the first time ever, I genuinely enjoyed an episode. For the first time, I had no real quibbles. For the first time the show managed to become more than the sum of its parts and actually achieved – for one, brief, shining moment – a quality on par with that of a second-string episode of “Nova.” You know, the filler episodes they throw in there to pad out the seasons that are genuinely interesting, but not nearly as interesting as their usual standard? Probably an episode featuring bugs or something…

EPISODE REVIEW: The 100: “Unity Day” (Episode 9)

Kevin Long's picture

First, the big news: “The 100” has been picked up for another season!

I have to admit I didn’t see that coming. The ratings haven’t been terrible, but they’re certainly lackluster.  Also, it turns out I was right: the first season WAS a 13-episode deal, which is common for midseason replacements. The second season deal is unclear, but it’s probably a more standard 22 episoe season. That’s  13 with an option to pick up the ‘back 9’ episodes if the ratings are good enough to justify it.
