Why Do Liars Lie? And Why Do They Get Annoyed When We Don't Immediately Believe Them?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Back in December, NASA reported "Discovering" a Non-Carbon-based life form. This quickly turned out to be a deliberate misrepresentation: NASA *Engineered* the life form, they didn't find it. NASA then couldn't understand why the public lost interest, rolled over, and went back to sleep. This, of course, resulted in a great deal of annoyance on the part of NASA and the biological sciences: Why aren't we excited? Why are we so stupid? Obviously, it must be our fault.

OPINION:What Green Lantern Taught Me About American Exceptionalism

sysadmin 2.0's picture

While watching Green Lantern:First Flight the other day, with intent to review (That sounds almost like a crime: "Watching with intent to review")(in some cases, it may actually BE a crime), something kept distracting me. Not that it's a bad movie- that's not it at all- it was a very good movie that has something to say about the American condition.

Snapshots from Crazyland

Some months back, a guy named "John Doe" sent me a self-published novel to review for the site. I should mention that this is *NOT* the same guy who sent me one last year, but a different one. Just like last time, after reading it, I told the guy there was no way I could give it a good review, and I didn't want to hurt his reputation, sales, or self-esteem by doing that. He said "Okey Dokey," removed the book from consideration, and that was that.

I’m Burned Out

Republibot 3.0's picture

This is *NOT* the end of the site or anything, but I wanted to let everyone know that I’m burned out. I’ve been fighting it for a while now, I’ve still been giving it a lot of effort, trying had and all, but in the last month or two I’ve become increasingly aware that I’m running on fumes as far as the site goes. This has happened before. I soldier on, I get through it. Today it came to a head, however, and, well, I’m burned out.

There were a number of factors that led to it.
1) A long term project that crapped out with nothing to show for it
2) A friend is dying

Because it’s a slow news month, everybody’s talking about this article here which shows the allegedly-startling news that weightlessness is bad for you. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100821/ap_on_sc/us_sci_space_weaklings;_ylt...

Can Good Writing Overcome Bad Religious Biases in Science Fiction?

Republibot 3.0's picture

As we've mentioned on occasion, God doesn't tend to turn up too often in Science Fiction, and when He does, it's as likely as not in the form of a slam on Him by some militant atheist. Christians, too, have their hangups in this regard. There's a tendency to make God play by our own sectarian rules in fiction. Either way, God tends to be used to illustrate preconceptions: If you're an atheist, then God will be used as a plot device to confirm things you already believed.
