The end of the World versus the Status Quo

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

My kid likes Greek mythology, and I like Norse. He asked me why one time, and I said "Because Norse has more cultural relevance. It's Proto-Germanic, our culture is derived from Germanic. It just touches on more of our basecode than Greek stuff does, since our culture is in no way related to ancient Greece."

"How does it connect with you more? Example?" he said.

The Perils of Being Right in the Wrong Way

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

These are not original thoughts, I can't really take credit for deep thinking here, but something has been bothering me for a while.

There is a rather new phenomenon: it's this thing where you attack people who are for the same things you are for not being for them in the right way. So if you post something that's against racism, you're not against it in the right way, or you're naive, or thinking wrong. If you are against war, you're not against it for the right reasons. The list goes on and on.

When the hell did we stop helping?

Kevin Long's picture

I’ve never smoked a day in my life, but I have an old cigarette case. It’s nickel, I think, and brass-plated, or at least brass-colored. My wife found it in a thrift shop a decade ago, and got it for me because it only cost a buck, and she figured I’d like the historical significance of it. I used it as a wallet – just an affectation I picked up during the Swing Revival days – its insides made a good money clip, I didn’t need to worry about my ID or credit cards getting bent, and, I dunno, it just felt sorta’ swanky.

I miss original fiction on the site.

Kevin Long's picture

Not much to talk about today, sorry, but I've been ruminating on the fact that there's really not much Original Fiction on the site anymore (Though what there has been has been - I think - above average).

I sort of miss that. I understand why it doesn't happen all that much anymore: it's a hell of a lot of work, and there's not a lot of payoff, but still, it was nice, right?

To that end, I think I'll start serializing one of my stories next week.

Sincerely,
Kevin Long

EPISODE REVIEW: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey: “A Sky Full of Ghosts” (Episode 4)

Kevin Long's picture

I took two pretty bad blows to the head today, and am debating whether or not I’ve got a concussion and whether or not I should go to a doctor. I’m also contemplating whether or not I’d miss being really really smart. On the one hand, I like being able to understand stuff. On the other hand, honestly, what the hell has being smart ever gotten me but depressed, frightened, and punched twice in the head? As a result, I’m not sure I’m in the best frame of mind (and may never be again) to review this.

I’ll give it a shot, though.
