EDITORIAL: It is not sinful to go into space

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

The other day I was talking to a very Christian guy who felt the whole Pluto thing was a complete and utter waste of time. He said that the Bible mentioned no life in outer space, and it takes place entirely on earth, which means that none of that stuff is of any consequence.

All this "Rebel Flag" flap has put my literary future in an uncomfortable spot

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

All this Rebel Flag stuff has put me in a rather awkward position as an author.

See, over the last nine years or so I've written a spate of stories that take place in a fictional timeline where space was colonized by semi-educated poor low-class rural types, mostly from the US. Rednecks, essentially. Of course about a third of the colonists are Russian and Chinese peasant-farmer types, too, and there's ones from other countries in even smaller numbers, but the bulk of the colonists were basically American hillbillies.

Sheldon Cooper gets a job working for "The Blaze."

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

Just a quick congratulations to "Sheldon Cooper," who started out as a reviewer here, and published a couple original fiction stories. He just started working for "The Blaze" today. This is the network started by uber-conservative and occasional lunatic Glenn Beck. While Beck is not my favorite pundit by a LONG shot. (Say what you will about Rush Limbaugh, he never used network time to try to convince me the Book of Mormon is True), getting a job in the media is a huge deal.

Well that looked fake...

My goodness, "Avatar" didn't age well, did it?

I remember seeing it in the theater and being blown away by how awesome and realistic it looked. Watched it last night on a really good, big TV screen, and it was just a really lavish cartoon.

It's amazing how quickly our eyes adapt to this stuff. One years jaw-droppingly realistic is next year's trip to toontown.

What's the point?

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

I've been asked/volunteered to contribute an article to good ol' Republibot once a week; a committment that I honestly haven't been very good about. Today...well, I was going to say, "Today I'm gonna do blah blah blah," but then I realized I honestly know what I'm gonna talk about. I'm just plopping myself down at the keys, and let's see where all this leads.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit's Earthday!

Randall Anthony Schanze's picture

Remember, folks: it's Earthday. The day we celebrate the earth for all it's done for us, such as...uhm...giving us something to stand on and collapsing occasionally burying Swiss towns, and other good stuff like that. So I want you all to go out and slash and burn several acres of forest or meadow, so we can actually SEE the earth and appreciate it better with all those plants and crap on it. If you have access to a bulldozer, today's the day to use it, but remember to share: Many of your friends will want to celebrate Earthday, too.
