Dollhouse

REVIEWS: Dollhouse: “Vows” (Season 2, Episode 2)

Republibot 3.0's picture

The previews made it look rather 'meh', but this was actually a very well-done episode from start to finish, and it ended up rather impressing me.

PLAY BY PLAY

Topher tells Ballard that he’s amazed himself - he’s managed to reprogram a brain in such a way that the brain reprograms the body, and this might change the world. He won’t say what he did, and it’s an oddly expositional and extraneous scene, so you know it’s going to come back in the third act in some capacity.

"Stargate Universe" and "Dollhouse": Ah, bugger!

Republibot 3.0's picture

Ah, bugger!

I've just realized that Dollhouse (Fox, Friday, 9PM) and Stargate Universe (Syfy, Friday, 9PM) have something in common. In deference to Trekies who might be reading this, I'll simply say "They're both on at the same time." (Trekies are notoriously bad at math)

EPISODE REVIEW: Dollhouse: “Vows” (Season 2, Episode 1)

Republibot 3.0's picture

When last we saw the Dollhouse, as you may recall, Paul Ballard had finally managed to crack it, but unfortunately let Alpha in. Higgaldy Piggaldy ensued, during which “Mellie” was freed, Paul struck a deal with the Dollhouse, Alpha escaped, Victor was sliced and diced, and we discovered that the doctor was a former doll with a fake personality.

Republibot 3.0's picture

Hi, everyone. First of all, we'd like to apologize again for the whole "Pirate" thing yesterday. Secondly, we'd just give you a heads up of what we'll be covering in the next few weeks:

* The Dollhouse will be returning September 25th, next Friday. I'll be resuming my coverage of that show for the site.

* Flash Forward will be debuting Thursday, September 24th, and Republibot 2.0 will be covering that show.

* Stargate: Universe will be debuting October 2nd, and I'll be (eagerly) covering that one.

BREAKING NEWS: Dollhouse gets a second season!

Republibot 3.0's picture

There have been rumors for the last week or so that Joss Whedon was pitching story ideas to the suits at FOX for a second season of his perpetually ratings-challenged "Dollhouse" Series. This was a surprise, since it's FOX after all, and it was just assumed the show was dead as a doornail. It had the lowest ratings of any hight-budget scripted series on TV - a 1.0 share in the male 18-49 demographic, but it consistently went up to a 1.4 if DVR ratings were factored in.

EPISODE REVIEW: Dollhouse: “Omega” (Episode 12 - Series Finale)

Republibot 3.0's picture

“We’re superior people, with a touch of German thrown in. What could possibly go wrong?”
---- Echo.

I have to admit, I’m kind of blown away by it all. Though Mr. Whedon really only delivered half a series, and only half of that was any good, the bit that was good totally lived up to the hype, even if that doesn’t completely redeem the slow, boring, uninspired start.

I’m going to do this in chronological order, rather than follow the fractured narrative structure of the episode, since it’ll make it easier for you, the reader

EPISODE REVIEW: Dollhouse: “Briar Rose” (Episode 11)

Republibot 3.0's picture

If you’d told me two months ago that a show as crappy as Dollhouse would end up mesmerizing me, I’d have called you a liar, a filthy, Buffy-obsessed Whedonite liar. The show was a turd. I mean, go back and read my early reviews. I stand by ‘em: it stank. And yet a bit over a month back, the show instantly rocketed in to position to claim the “Most Improved Student” award. It really is compelling and occasionally amazing TV, way better than the final season of Galactica.

EPISODE REVIEWS: Dollhouse: “Haunted” (Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

There is a not-very-narrow line between ‘acting’ and ‘putting on a show.’ It’s fairly broad, but it’s also occasionally hard to delineate exactly, and dependent somewhat upon culture, period, and venue. On the one hand, acting is acting is acting, right? But on the other hand consider Noh drama in Japan which moves at a speed that makes glaciers seem freakin’ sonic, and uses this staid unreality to emphasize the emotional elements of the story in a sort of hyper realized fashion. To a student of Japanese drama, a particularly slow performance can be moving, brilliant, more real than real.

BREAKING (Studio) NEWS: Dollhouse isn't cancelled...yet, and SG1 makes a third return from the grave

Republibot 3.0's picture

This just in: FOX will *not* be running the finale of Dollhouse. This *does not* mean that Dollhouse is cancelled...yet. The network hasn't reached a decision on that subject yet, but there's one episode being produced that they won't be airing.
