THINGS WE'RE INTERESTED IN: "Green Lantern"

Wow. 150 million bucks, and they couldn't get someone who could do a better line reading than "Hal. This. Test. Today. Is. Important." Geez, it's Carol Ferris, she's an important character. They couldn't get a chick who could act?

Seriously: GL has always been my favorite DC hero - by a HUGE margin - and I'm overjoyed that he's finally, finally, finally getting some big-screen exposure, but this just looks...I dunno. I'm not really digging it.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: "Batman: City of Scars"

Republibot 3.0's picture

I gotta' say I'm pretty impressed by this new "Batman" fan film. As a rule, we don't critique fan films, as that's missing the point, and also because while it's fine to look at a $500 million film and say "This is just a remake of Ferngully: The Last Rainforest," it seems horribly cruel to use that same standard on something a guy cobbled together for seven grand as a labor of love, you know?

Why does Superman hate the South?

sysadmin 2.0's picture

In a storyline that launches today with the historic Superman #700 (by J. Michael Stracynzki); Superman, feeling that he has lost touch with America, decides to walk across America to reconnect with his adopted home after a couple of years of cosmic hoopla. I really like this idea, in some ways it serves as a sequel/companion to the famous "Hard Travelling Heroes" storyline. To help promote this story, DC Comics has launched a contest. The contest is simple- write an essay as to why Superman should visit your town, and your town will be featured in a future story during this series.

I like this idea. I think it's a good idea, until you get to the execution. The contest is limited to towns within 50 miles of Superman's planned itinerary...

Last Impressions: Watchmen (1986)

You know that feeling you get when you’re really into a book, so you deliberately slow down your reading to make it last longer? And then, when you get to the ending, you’re so caught up in it that you didn’t notice the CD had ended and the kids went to bed and the sun went down?

FAN FILM FRIDAY: "I'm Power Girl, Dammit!" (2006)

Republibot 3.0's picture

There's endless lists of the differences between professional productions and Fan Films, and pretty much all of them are valid, but if you ask me, one of the most significant is the one no one actually wants to admit to: Professional actors and actresses are, by and large, better looking than us regular folks. Certainly better looking than me (Though I've got kind of a rakish Orson Wells thing going on, but I'm more striking than handsome, really).

FAN FILM FRIDAY: "Villains Day Off" (2009)

Republibot 3.0's picture

In keeping with our temporary respite from space-based SF Fan Films, I've decided to feature "Villains Day Off." I've been debating running this one for some time now, but I always hold off at the last minute because of that damn "Villains Just Want A Day Off" song that plays through the first half of the soundtrack. And some of the sound is a bit wonky.
