MOVIE REVIEW: “Avatar” (2009) [SPOILER LITE]

Republibot 3.0's picture

Wow, what a gorgeous movie! Seriously, I’ve seen a lot of movies in my day (More than eight, definitely), and I have never seen a film in which the scenery was this sumptuous. Oh, sure, I’ve seen movies with considerably more lush set design, costuming, what have you - the 1984 version of “Dune” springs to mind - but, the exteriors just completely blew me away in a fashion that I haven’t felt since “The Fifth Element” (1997) or back in ‘77 when I was ten and saw Star Wars for the first time.

MOVIE REVIEW: Avatar

Republibot 1.0's picture

Ok, so here goes – let’s just dive in and get the painful part of this review over with right up front and then spend some time on meaningless rambling and thoughts. Avatar, the movie, was much, much better than I expected – surprisingly so, but still not the masterpiece that you would expect or possibly hope based on the intense amount of effort and money that has been put into it. Why is that the painful part? Well… because I was hoping for a disaster of monumental proportions that I could make fun of endlessly and think back on in my old age fondly as the height of Hollywood overindulgence.

Man, I’m sick as a dog tonight, but I’m still gonna’ try my normal Friday night triple-play of reviews. We’ll see if I make it through, or even survive.

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man:Armored Adventures : “Designed Only For Chaos” (Episode 21)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Once again, we have an above-average episode that hits on some moral and character development in the show that, somehow, manages to fall a bit short of its potential. But as they’re consistently beating their own average, I have little to complain about.

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man:Armored Adventures: “Ancient History 101” (Episode 9)

Iron man’s unexpected winning streak continues with what is unquestionably my favorite episode of the series so far. I initially decided to start reviewing this series on a lark, since Marvel is woefully underrepresented on our site (Owing mostly to the fact that I don’t really like it, and the guys on here who do like it don’t wanna’ write about it), but Iron Man is really the only Marvel Hero who works for me (I think mainly because Rocket Red was so woefully under-used in the DC universe).

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man:Armored Adventures: “Field Trip” (Episode 8)

Sorry it took me a week to get this review up, but life got in the way. The good news, however, is that it was worth the wait and that with “Meltdown” two weeks ago, this one, and tonight’s new episode, this turkey of a show has finally hit some kind of a stride and is becoming worth watching. It’s not all the way there yet, but they seem to have finally hit on the idea that they need (A) stories and (B) to make use of their characters.

MOVIE REVIEW: “Up” (2009)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Let’s just get this out of the way before we go any further: yes, I cried. Despite my right-leaning conservative status, I’m secure enough in my manhood to admit I was crying several times in this movie. I wasn’t bawling like a six-month-old baby girl or anything - and if I did, I wouldn’t admit it because I’m not *That* secure in my manhood - but there were definitely some water streaming down my face at several points in the movie. And there were several *other* points that my eyes were definitely stinging and my throat got kinda’ tight.

Responding to a break-in at Stark Tower, Tony meets someone calling himself “Blizzard.” He used to work for Staind, but was framed for an accident he wasn’t responsible for, and spent several years on the lam, during which he lost his wife, kid, and a lot of magazine subscriptions that he forgot to put in forwarding orders for. Tony and Blizz hit it off, having a lot in common. Blizz intends to steal back all his inventions for Staind, and then take the guy down. Tony signs on to help him.

MOVIE REVIEW: “The Battle For Terra.”

Republibot 3.0's picture

One of the nice things about being a basically hypercritical and negative individual like myself is that when your opinions turn out to be wrong, you’re almost invariably pleasantly surprised. “Well, that’s it: we’re all gonna’ die,” I say, and it’s kind of hard not to be happy when you’re proved to be wrong. I feel sad for all the stupid hippies of the world, who constantly aspire to great and glorious things, only to have ugly stupid reality and traffic jams and famines and coffee stains bring them down.

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man Armored Adventures: “Secrets and Lies” (Episode 3)

Republibot 3.0's picture

As we know, origin stories always suck, and last week wasn’t really any exception. In fact, not only were they saddled with an origin story for Iron Man, they were also saddled with having to retcon/reboot war profiteer/womanizer/drunken Tony Stark in to a Peter Parker-esque teen with a heart of gold. To be honest, they didn’t fail nearly as bad as I’d anticipated, even if the whole plot felt artificial and silly.

This week was much better, shorter on the action, longer on the character-based story. Still not great by a long shot, but not terrible, and better than last week.
