EPISODE REVIEW: The Venture Bros.: “Return To Malice” (Season 4, Episode 4)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Sorry for the delay in the review, but for some reason my DVR will *NOT* record this damn show. It’s recorded the season premier twice now, the second episode not at all, the third episode, and not this one. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with it, but of course this results in me shooting my blood pressure through the roof, and having to find some other source for the episodes, which is surprisingly time-consuming, because Adult Swim doesn’t post ‘em online immediately after they air anymore, for some dam fool reason. Also, irritatingly, the site is running all wonky today.

EPISODE REVIEW: Ben 10:Alien Force : “If All Else Fails” (Season 3, Episode 8)

Republibot 3.0's picture

We’re now past the middle of the entirely-unexpected third season of Ben 10, and though the show continues to struggle to figure out exactly what it wants to be, it seems to have finally fallen in to a nice groove of storytelling. It may not be as ambitious as the previous two seasons, and it may be laboring under the heavy and obvious hand of ‘redefining’ the characters, but it remains a good show, with a solid core.

EPISODE REVIEW: The Venture Bros.: “Perchance to Dean” (Season 4, Episode 3)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I hate to be one of those people who say “This show isn’t as good as it used to be.” It’s typical for any poser to claim that it was funnier when it was young and raw, before everyone jumped on the bandwagon. The fact that that’s occasionally somewhat true just makes it all the more annoying, because no one likes a poser (Except other posers, it’s a kind of mating call, I expect), and a poser who managed to fall ass-backwards in to being right is damn irritating.

EPISODE REVIEW: The Venture Brothers: “Blood of the Father, Heart of Steel” (Season 4, Episode 1)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Before we begin, I want to point out that I love The Venture Brothers, and have from the first moment I saw it, three seasons and something like sixteen years ago. Despite their very slow production time, the show is one of those rare programs that appears to be telling jokes only *I* get, only aimed at *Me*, me, glorious me. Sure, some of the gags don’t work; sure sometimes it grosses me the hell out, but it’s a small price to pay for inflaming my solipsistic leanings.

That said, you know, I really didn’t *get* this episode.

EPISODE REVIEW: Ben 10: Alien Force: “Inferno” (Season 3, Episode 3)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Interestingly, the new season of Ben 10 Alien Force has gone out of its way to feel…kind of old. Ben is less mature, Kevin is a monster again, Grandpa is around, Gwen is likewise less mature, and Ben and Gwen have a slightly more adversarial relationship than they have for the last two season. Added to which, Ben has less-than-complete control of the Omnitrix, and he’s pissed off Azimuth, so he’s unlikely to get it fixed any time soon.

EPISODE REVIEW: Ben 10: Alien Force: “Vengence of Vilgax, Parts 1 and 2” (Season 3, Episodes 1 and 2)

“Ben Ten, I have come to kill you and enslave your world. Is now a bad time?”

PLAY BY PLAY:

We start out with a lengthy scene of combat between a slightly-redesigned Vilgax and Ultimo. They duke it out for a surprisingly long time, and then Ultimo yields and Vilgax either kills or cripples him, it’s deliberately nebulous, but whatever he did, Ultimo’s not going to shake it off any time soon. Vilgax’ lackey hooks Ultimo up to some big techmojo that gives his powers to Vilgax, who’s now hailed as “The conqueror of ten worlds.” That’s right, he’s Vilgax 10!

DAYS OF FUTURE PAST: The House of Tomorrow in Parody Form

Republibot 3.0's picture

This mediocre 1946 MGM cartoon - but then aren't all MGM cartoons kinda' mediocre? - is a deliberate parody of those "House of Tomorrow" shorts and displays from World's Fairs.
Despite the lack of inspiration in this, I totally dig the 40s animation style and the whole late-deco look of it all.

EPISODE REVIEW: Iron Man: Armored Adventures: “Panther‘s Prey” (Episode 15)

Republibot 3.0's picture

Welcome to what may or may not be the second season of Iron Man, Armored Adventures. This might be Episode 2, season 2, or it might just be Episode 15 of the unexpectedly long season 1. Nobody seems to care enough to post it on the ol’ interwebs, and I’m not really a Marvel guy so I don’t just intuitively know this stuff, but wherever we are, it was a pretty good episodes.

DAYS OF FUTURE PAST: Will they still serve tea in the City of Tomorrow?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Part of a 1941 british cartoon that appears to be a semi-parody of the world of tomorrow, but then it unexpectedly turns in to a commercial for tea. Granted, it's a parody, but it's not a whole-hearted parody. Clearly whoever made this thinks it's cool. Click through to see. 'Cuz, you know, this post went up at noon, and you're kinda' hungry, and maybe thinking about tea anyway...
