EPISODE REVIEW: Caprica: An Overview of the Final Five Episodes

As most of you know, a combination of broken DVR, house full of sick kids, and by basic inattention to previews all conspired to keep me from watching the "Caprica Burn Off Marathon" the other night. (Or, indeed, even having been aware of it until R2 called me up twenty minutes before it hit the air)

I will get around to reviewing them as soon as the CDC lifts the quarantine on my house, and they let us all out of our respective plastic bubbles, but this is just too big of a deal to let slide for a week ago. I asked our readers for help.

Flabbergasted stepped in, striding the earth like a titan. Not only did he pinch hit for me when I fumbled the ball (Mixaphorically speaking), but he didn't just crank out crap: His review/reviews are really, really good.

Check 'em out under the jump.

CAPRICA REVIEWS DELAYED

Science Fiction Uber-Babe Anne Francis died last night. Did Syfy decide to run "Forbidden Planet," or her episodes of genre TV shows? They did not. Did they decide to run a marathon of "Honey West" episodes? They did not. (Granted that show isn't SF, but it's no less SF than WWF Wrestling is, and a whole lot more fun to watch). So what *ARE* they doing?

BREAKING NEWS: Caprica is Officially Cancelled

Republibot 3.0's picture

Coming as a surprise to no one, Caprica has been officially cancelled by Syfy. Never a huge ratings draw, viewership dropped from a premier-high of about 1.6 million viewers to a bit below 1.2 million during the initial run of nine episodes, rebounding a bit towards the end of that run.

Since the mid-season break, the show has been bleeding ratings like a stuck pig, dropping nearly a half-million viewers. The episode last week hit 718,000 viewers, and the ratings for the episode that aired last night aren't available online yet, but I'm expecting the overnights were even lower.

EPISODE REVIEW: Caprica: “False Labor” (Episode 13)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I don’t think there’s any lingering doubt in anyones’ mind that this show is toast. Last week’s episode hit an all-time ratings low of 718,000 viewers. That means effectively the studio paid $4.17 for every viewer. That’s actually pretty sad, because this week, after a miserable three-week crapfest, the show suddenly found its footing again, and was pretty darn good.

Daniel attempts to blackmail the board in order to regain control of his company, with the assistance of theoretical co-star Joe Adama. (Who frankly seems mostly incidental to the show at this point). He gleefully betrays one of them with personal info. Another kills himself rather than let information about his violent hooker habit come out. Daniel blows off the hysterical widow. He regains the U-83 proto-cylon corpse.

BSG News: The Young Admiral Adama, and Caprica

Republibot 3.0's picture

We were supposed to have like two more months until Caprica came back, but they decided to burn off the final ten episodes before the end of the year, before the actor's contracts expire, *Just In Case* they decide to sign it for a second year. - seriously, is this a textbook 'troubled' series or what? - I thought I'd regale you of some fairly old BSG news.

EPISODE REVIEW: Caprica: “Unvanquished” (Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

For those of you new to the site, I’m somewhat counter-intuitively a big fan of Caprica. I hated the last couple seasons of BSG, and felt utterly betrayed by the finale and the rapidly-deteriorating storytelling on that series, I wasn’t enamored of the prospect of a prequel, particularly one with as circuitous a development path as Caprica had, I hated the pilot movie, but I totally dig the series. I’ve had practically nothing but good things to say about it.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Yet Another Spinoff?

Republibot 3.0's picture

Syfy exec Mark Stern recently announced that the network may be seeking a second spinoff to the memorable, influential, buzz worthy, but ultimately not-very-good “Battlestar Galactica” series. This hypothetical series would be “Space Based” and possibly “Not a traditional series,” whatever that means.

So let’s have some irresponsible speculation as to what that means:

EPISODE REVIEW: Caprica: “End of Line” (Episode 9, but really Episode 10)

Republibot 3.0's picture

I should probably explain why I’m giving two numbers for the last several episodes. The initial deal for this series was a season of 20 episodes, of which the pilot counted for two. For whatever reason, the official count for these things has somehow decided the pilot movie was only one ep, however they’re still only doing 20 hours of TV this year, and billing it as 19 episodes. There’s no real change here, but it stymies me with my OCD way.
