RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “The Magnificent Warriors” (Story 6)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Tue, 09/07/2010 - 00:00I can see the network executive conference that led to this episode: a bunch of paunchy, silk-shirted boring middle-aged white guys with perms and loud, fat ties, sitting around an avocado green table, saying something like, “Glen, Glen, Glen m’boy, this whole ‘post apocalyptic’ thing you’re doing is so… apocalyptic, so grim. Couldn’t you, you know, bring the funny? And maybe involve Lorne Green a bit more in the action? People loved him on Bonanza or The Big Valley or The Virginian or My Mother The Car, or whatever the heck it was he was in.”

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Parts I and II” (Story 5)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Tue, 08/24/2010 - 00:00Last time out we discussed the wonky ways the episodes of this series can be numbered. This two-parter could be considered episodes 6 and 7, or 8 and 9, or (In the syndicated movie package) 3. This one is more confusing than most, actually, since there’s a rumor that this was actually intended to be the second episode of the whole series. We’ll discuss that more below.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “The Long Patrol” (Episode 4, 5, or 7 depending...)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Tue, 07/27/2010 - 00:00Readers of my BSG reviews here will probably have noticed some confusion as to the episode numbering for this series. The reason isn’t one of sequencing, it’s just the wonky episode lengths, that change the numbering depending on the venue the show aired in. For instance, “Saga of a Star World” counts as only one episode, however when syndicated it counted as three. The second story - the two-part “Lost Planet of the Gods” - was the second episode when broadcast, but in syndication it was the fourth and fifth ones.

Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Tue, 06/29/2010 - 01:08Last time out, I gave you the literary equivalent of the Vietnam War by way of a review. I apologize. Again. I had a lot of info to get through, but let’s see if I can do it in a less murderously insane fashion this time out, by which I mean: “Shorter”

SONG OF THE WEEK: "Battlestar Rhapsody" by The Great Luke Ski (2009)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Mon, 06/21/2010 - 01:00The Great Luke Ski is kind of a third-generation Filker and a musical parodist, not unlike Weird Al, but without as good a voice. Seriously, I know Al sounds a bit like Big Bird on occasion, but at least he can hit those notes, you know? And his production is top notch. This one is certainly *not,* and in fact it's a little painful to listen to some of the more operatic stretchy parts, but this really is funny as hell. Check it out below the jump.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “The Lost Warrior” (Episode 5, 3, or 2, depending on who’s counting)
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Tue, 06/15/2010 - 01:23I think this review will be a lot shorter. I really have hopes this time out. The first one I did was long enough to be evidence of some kind of neurological impairment, but the second one was merely an exercise in hypergraphia driven by OCD. Granted, still a neurological impairment (Actually two for the price of one), but it’s a much more serviceable, much less annoying kind of crazy than the first review. And this one should almost be like the kind of thing a normal human would do.
Why?
Because (A) this is the worst episode of the entire series, and (B) nothing much happens.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “Saga of a Star World” (Episode 1) Chapter 5
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Fri, 06/11/2010 - 00:00ATENTION JOYLESS CITIZENRY! You've made it! You've survived CLASSIC BATTLESTAR GALCTICA WEEK here on Republibot, though whether or not you'll ever fully recover or enjoy life and love again is a matter of some debate.
Fortunately, as I've gotten NEARLY every bit of behind-the-scenes information I know out of the way in this review/essay/master's thesis, subsequent editions should be quite a bit shorter and less grueling. Unless Maren Jensen emails me or something, and suddenly I'll end up with a lot more to talk bout. But that's not too likely.
Anyway, if you've lasted this long and I haven't yet beat all interest in the subject out of you, read on, content in the knowledge that while I probably *will* do this to you again, I probably *won't* do it any time soon. And if I have managed to overwhelm and destroy your childhood love of all things Galactican...cool! Just hang out, and our normal friday night reviews will be up a bit later.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978): “Saga of a Star World” (Episode 1) Chapter 4
Submitted by Republibot 3.0 on Thu, 06/10/2010 - 00:00It's CLASSIC BATTLESTAR GALACTICA WEEK here on Republibot, and a special edition of our much-lauded "Retrospeculative TV" feature in which we go into literally nauseating detail about a show you've probably already seen so many times that you're sick of it. And do we do this for money, or for fame, or for fortune? Well, yes, actually, but there's really not all that much of any of that to be had on a fool's errand like this. No, mostly we do it because I'm horribly longwinded.
No, wait, uhm...love of the genre. Yes. We do it for love of the genre. And the lingering shards of my 11-year-old-boy crush on Maren Jensen. Seriously, hubba-freakin'-hubba!
