MOVIE REVIEW: Iron Man 3

Wil Avitt's picture

Here we are, Botophiles! The first big science fiction movie of the summer, and it's shaping up in just the opening weekend to possibly be the highest grossing film of the year (though with Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel both still on deck, you really can't say that with any sort of certainty yet). Iron Man 3 brings back principal actors Robert Downey, jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Don Cheadle as USAF LTC James Rhodes/War Machine/Iron Patriot, Gwenyth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan (though Favreau only acts in this movie as he has passed on directorial duties to Shane Black), as well as introducing newcomers to the franchise Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian (creator of Extremis) and Sir Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin (sort of).

OPINION: Why Marvel Knocked Avengers Out of the Park and Why Warner Bros. Will Ruin Justice League

Wil Avitt's picture

The Avengers is currently the third highest grossing film of all time behind Gone With the Wind at #1 and Avatar at #2. It should also be noted that Avatar's and Gone's numbers include DVD and television revenue (and in Gone's case that includes more than 70 years of revenue), so a good case can be made for Avengers being the most successful film of all time. Of course, it didn't take too much longer after Avengers hit the ONE BILLION dollar mark that Warner Bros. started talking about resurrecting the Justice League movie that was aborted back in 2007 or 2008. But why was Avengers so successful and can Warners possibly replicate this success?

MOVIE REVIEW: The Dark Knight Rises

Wil Avitt's picture

Well, here we are, my review of The Dark Knight Rises. It's a week late, but I'm sure you'll all agree that the delay was both necessary and worth it, as giving people a little extra time to see the movie allows us to have a better discussion of it. If you didn't catch my DC Update last week, I will offer one last warning. The following review contains MASSIVE SPOILERS. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I highly suggest you do not read on any further.

BREAKING NEWS: G.I. Joe: Retaliation Pushed Back to 2013

Wil Avitt's picture

I have just recently learned that GI Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to 2008's GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, has been pushed back almost an entire year to March 2013. It was originally slated to come out next month. Why the last minute release change? Paramount states that the reason is because the want to convert the film to 3D and that they are also hoping that in March it can gross an opening like The Hunger Games got this past March.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Avengers

Wil Avitt's picture

Ok, here we are, The Avengers. Director Joss Whedon's culmination of everything Marvel Studios has been working toward for the past five years, since 2007's Iron Man ended with a cameo in which Nick Fury offered to Iron Man membership into something called the Avenger Initiative. The Avengers, or Avengers Assemble as it's being called in the UK, presumably to distinguish it from the 60's British television series and 90's movie of the same name, currently holds a 94% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is being touted as the comic book movie of the year, and quite possibly the decade. By the end of its opening weekend it has beaten out Harry Potter for the opening weekend sales record by more than $30M. So what did I think of The Avengers? I could sum it all up in a single word: disappointing.

Wil Avitt's picture

February 3rd marks the opening of Chronicle, the first of what is shaping up to be a great year for science fiction movies. We've got a third and final outing for Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight, the return of Agents Kay and Jay and the debut of the very first comic book superhero All-Star film in Marvel's The Avengers, possibly the most anticipated film in this year's summer movie season. Join me as we take a look at this year's science fiction movies and discuss what has potential and what will probably fall flat.

MOVIE REVIEW: Captain America: The First Avenger

Wil Avitt's picture

Captain America: The First Avenger tells the story of Steve Rogers, a young guy who wants nothing more than to serve his country by fighting in World War II. The only problem is he's been classified 4F (unfit for military service). Steve's best friend, James "Bucky" Barnes, is a sergeant in the US Army and although he feels for his friend, he knows he wouldn't last long in battle with his frail frame. Bucky tries to talk Steve into giving up on the Army, but can't help but support him every time he tries to enlist (using different aliases in different recruiting offices). It is during one of these conversations that Steve's determination is noticed by a German scientist who is looking for candidates for his super soldier program.

MOVIE REVIEW: Thor

Wil Avitt's picture

In the past decade since Bryan Singer made superhero flicks a marketable comodity with the first installment of the X-Men franchise, I have only been disappointed three times. The first was Hulk, the second was Superman Returns and the latest comic book movie, Thor (AKA Thor: The Mighty Avenger) has become the third. Please, do not confuse disappointed with dissatisfied. I didn't hate any of these movies, but in every case I was left with the notion that they could have done better.
