Avatar: A Capsule Review by Dr. Charlie Starr

Avatar on big screen in 3D lives up to the hype. Stunningly beautiful. Cameron succeeds in bringing film to a new level. Will be interesting to see what reaction the film evokes on the small screen (i.e. DVD). As a big screen blockbuster, however, it achieves its goals. The movie is beautiful. Its archetypal motifs are familiar (but then that's what archetypes are). It acheives the effects of mythopoeisis which Lewis and Tolkien wrote so much about--Cameron creates an entire universe, through which the audience gets to walk.

REPUBLIBOT WEEKEND MOVIE PREVIEW: Movies Opening 12-18-09

Republibot 1.0's picture

So, to get started let's just get this off of my chest right up front; I‘m not really reviewing anything here. Unless stated otherwise I’ve not seen any of the movies in this ‘Preview’. I am really just thoughtlessly passing judgment on films that are scheduled to open this week and that I haven’t researched at all (not even a little bit). All of the film information in these previews, including the plot summary, has been pulled from the Opening This Week page of IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/). In this week’s installment we are taking quick looks at: Did You Hear About the Morgans, Avatar, and Crazy Heart – amongst others…

So... are we good now? Good. Can we get started? Excellent. Follow me to after the jump...

Official Avatar Teaser Trailer - the real thing

Republibot 1.0's picture

So, color me skeptical, but I am not sure what to think about the new James Cameron movie. Everything effects wise that I have heard is pretty promising, but everything story wise that I have heard is lame, lame, lame.

There is a reason that I don't like Star Trek and Anime, and Avatar seems to be the culmination of all that soft-core Gaia Porn lame-itudiness that gives me very little hope for good genre productions ever actually being green lit on a big scale from hollywood.

Anyway, official teaser trailer after the jump.
