FAN FILM FRIDAY:Doctor Who Anime

Church's picture

About a week ago a fan-made anime of Doctor Who made quite a splash, winning (mostly) praise across the science fiction interwebs.

After a few days it was taken down by the creator. It's not clear why, although there are no shortage of theories. Join me after the jump for a walkthrough of this remarkable short film.

Aeon Flux – Movie Review

Republibot 1.0's picture

Aeon Flux is a bit of a conundrum to review as far as a movie goes. It is a big screen adaptation of an all flash over substance cartoon in which a scantily clad female assassin jumped through body contorting physical stunts in the pursuit of her quarry only to die at the end of each episode. And, oh yeah, each installment only lasted 2 minutes. And it was made for MTV – Music Television. You know, the place where intellectual depth is prized above all else, unless, of course there is the option of shaking your booty or there is a spring break fashion show or pretty much anything else sparkly that would catch the eye of an average attention deficit 15 year old.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Star Blazers: "Jupiter's Floating Continent" (Season 1, Episode 5)

The Argo is on its way to Jupiter. My second favorite plant next to earth, because we have oxygen, Mountain Dew, Star Craft 2, and sunflower seeds.

MOVIE REVIEW: “Robotech: The Movie” (1986)

Republibot 3.0's picture

“Robotech” is a 1985 American series that is composed of three separate, unrelated early-eighties Japanese series. These were re-dubbed and slightly re-written to tie their narratives together into one epic multigenerational tale. It gets wildly derided by snotty fans of Anime, and deservedly so since it is, at root, a mutilation of original art, and kind of stupid as well.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Star Blazers: "Test Warp to Mars" (Season 1, Episode 4)

Welcome to episode four. At least I think its episode four. The DVD does not do a good job of breaking up the episodes, they did not space the DVD by episode, they just put episodes 1 thru 5 together and then broke it up into four chapters, see my confusion, four does not go into five very well.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Star Blazers: "Ultra-Menace Missile" (Season 1, Episode 3)

Episode three starts with the official launch of the spaceship Argo. Now I know you might be a little confused because we launched the spaceship in my last review, but apparently that was not the official launch. How do I know this one is the official one? Because they are having a parade! And everyone knows nothing is official until you have a big parade.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross: “Blue Wind” (Episode 13) AND Robotech: “Blue Wind” (Episode 13)

Just a quick explanation of the concept here for our new readers, or for those who kind of lost track after we put Macross in hiatus back in May:

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Star Blazers: "The Battle at Pluto" AND "Carrier Attacks the Sleeping Yamato" (Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2)

I grew up in the 80’s and it seems to me that cartoons back then were more “EPIC”, with stories about real heroes and their struggles. Today most of the cartoons my kids watch are just short blurts of farts and shots of butt cracks, nothing that requires an attention span of more than one minute. Don’t get me wrong there have been some great cartoons in recent years, one of which is my all-time favorite: “Avatar the Last Airbender”. That being said I still believe the cartoons of the 80’s, as a whole, were far more heroic.

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Macross: “Big Escape” (Episode 12) AND Robotech: “The Big Escape” (Episode 12)

Back in May I did my last review in this series. Why? Because “The Democrats are back in the Whitehouse / So no one’s got no money no more*” and I just frankly couldn’t afford another disk. My new best friend and hero, “Robotech_Macross Guy” promptly informed me that the entire series was available on Hulu. I thanked him profusely, and said I’d get right on reviewing the rest of the series.

Sixteen weeks later I actually finally got started on it. I suck like that.
