RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Quark: “May The Source Be With You” (Episode 2)

As we’ve discussed before, there’s a difference between a “Pilot” episode and a mere “First” episode. “Pilots” are an example made to talk a network into buying a show. A “First” is when the show was already purchased based on a pitch, and there was no need to show the suits an example beforehand. For instance, the first episode of the original Battlestar Galactica wasn’t a Pilot, they’d already agreed to do the series.

Welcome to Classic Battlestar Galactica Week here on Republibot, and our super-special edition of Retrospeculative TV, the column in which we take 30 year old piece-of-crap TV shows that no one cares about, and treat them as if they were brand-spanking-new piece of crap TV shows that no one cares about. RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Battlestar Galactica (1978/79): Prolog

We’re trying to do shows here on Retrospeculative TV that had a huge influence on us as younger folk, and checking to see how they hold up. Essentially we’re treating them as if they’re new, and subjecting them to the same rigors we use on modern shows. The only real criteria here is that they have to be more than a decade old and, ideally, have impacted us in some forceful way, but we want to stay away from the really popular, legendary shows. Why?

RETROSPECULATIVE TV: Quark: “Quark” (Episode 1)

Here on Retrospeculative TV, we’re looking at shows that had a formative influence on us, but which have either been completely forgotten, or simply not gotten their due because of their comparatively short runs. In my case, these tend to be “Orphan Shows,” ones that didn’t even make it through their first season, and as such never got syndicated. One such show that had an entirely ludicrous influence on my upbringing was “Quark,” staring Richard Benjamin (!), Tim Thomerson, and the poor man’s Werner Klemperer: Conrad Janis.
