RIP Tom Clancy

kelloggs2066's picture

Tom Clancy, best selling author has died yesterday after a short illness at age 66. Cause of death has not been released.

He pretty much defined the techno-thriller novel as it came to exist.

His best sellingnovels are conservative in nature and scope and dedication.

(Disclaimer: The world does not actually explode.)

The Night the World Exploded

Whew what a stinker! I haven't seen "2012" or "The Day After Tomorrow" but this two star wonder really takes the cake when it comes to Greenpeace Eco-maniac Heroic Terrorism.

Star Trek: The Alternative Alternative Factor

kelloggs2066's picture

A new book has been released by Marc Cushman on the original Star Trek. Apparently the first of three volumes this is "These Are The Voyages, TOS, Season One" While I do not have a copy yet, there are a couple of excerpts online. They give some detail and anecdotes into the production of the early episodes. One episode covered explains the mystery of why "The Alternative Factor" really really really sucks.

Apparently, it was re-written at the last minute when the NBC Producer said they would refuse to run or pay for the story as written.

Modern Storytelling vs Old Style.

The subject of how TV series stories used to be episodic, versus today's multi-story arcs, popped up in the discussion on "Where Star Trek started to go wrong", and I thought about addressing it there, but then I thought it deserved its own discussion.

Each style has its good points, and its bad points. I'd like to explore them now.

Where Star Trek Failed For Me

kelloggs2066's picture

We've all heard the trendy deconstruction of Star Trek TNG: That The Federation is either an Evil Empire or a Bored Collective of Cult Members who believe they're perfect.

It was come up with by bored English Majors who spent far
too much time in their high school literary/poetry analysis classes investigating the deeper meanings of Kafka and Dostoyevsky. (Perhaps you know someone like that. Perhaps you *are* someone like that.)

But, for me, Star Trek went off the rails much earlier.
