The Star Wars, Concluded

Mama Fisi's picture

Well, Dark Horse Comics has released the concluding issue in its adaptation of the very earliest draft of George Lucas' The Star Wars, and the best thing I can say about it is, "Well, it was...interesting."

In one of the letters to the editors in the back of the magazine, it is observed that this script was adapted from a very rough draft, and that the story went through several massive rewrites before it made it to the screen.  Thank God for whoever George had helping him edit this, because this version would have gone down in a blaze of obscurity.

Con Report: Sci Fi Valley Con, Altoona, PA 2014

If you've never been to a science fiction convention, you really should make a point to attend at least one, because they're often a whole lot of fun.  Part craft bazaar, part costume party, the best are well-run and full of interesting things to see and do.  And part of the fun is the spirit of camaraderie that develops when a few hundred weirdos get together to pretend they're someone (or something) they're not.

Original Fiction: Mike & Gaby, by K. Garrison Kellogg

(Author's note: a few months back, I published a version of this story that I had rewritten from memory, titled Pecan Pie.  I recently found the original version, which I now present here.)

The truck stop had the ambiguous smell of grease, stale sweat, and tobacco in its various forms, some of it hanging in the air, the rest in blotches and lumps on the linoleum-tiled floor, fighting for supremacy with the french fries and chewing gum for the repulsive honor of clinging to the shoes of the graveyard-faced transients shuffling between here and there.
