Helix: "Black Rain" (Season 1, Episode 11)

This week’s line: “That rat didn’t crawl in there by itself.” With "there" being a microwave oven, I guess it didn’t. Unless the magical Narvik virus somehow made it super intelligent, in which case it was probably just trying to end the misery of being stuck on Helix. I can relate to that.

The Walking Dead: "Alone" (Season 4, Episode 13)

We see some of this show’s strengths return to the fore this week. Specifically, they know how to do a theme for an episode, stringing it across multiple characters and scenes, even if they do bludgeon you with it at times. Second, they do killer set pieces. You won’t find much in the way of TV that does it better.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman

Mr. Peabody and Sherman is a movie.

Let that sink in. Filler animation from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show is now a would-be blockbuster. To the tune of DreamWorks spending 145 million dollars to make this. That can’t bode well for the course of human civilization, but I’ll be darned if the thing isn’t actually okay.

They don’t try to explain the brilliant dog bit, or why society accepts him. That’s certainly for the best. He’s just Mr. Peabody with his adopted human son Sherman. And they have a time machine. If you can deal with that, you’re in.

Helix: "Fushigi" (Season1, Episode 10)

It’s Japanese word meaning “mystery,” or “secret.” Clever, huh? In all honesty, though,  “Fusilli” would work better as a title. That’s a thick, corkscrew shaped pasta, a better description for the actual experience of watching this show’s plot unfold.

The Walking Dead: "Still" (Season 4, Episode 12)

The title’s right. This one was still, too much so. It’s the first episode of this half-season that fell kind of flat for me. Part of the problem is that it focused on Darryl and Beth, two characters who bring issues to the table for what the script was trying to do. Having Darryl be ornery doesn’t work anymore because we already know that deep down he isn’t. Having Beth do much of anything doesn’t work because they’ve yet to make her interesting. This episode included.
