Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Force is strong in this on. Go see it.

Go see it now!

Gripping events happen. People react to them like real people. There's even genuine humor. As an added plus, the folks with Force powers don't act like total idiots. You know, all the stuff that was missing from the still-life merchandising scam Lucas tried to pass off as a prequel trilogy.

The Expanse: "The Big Empty," 'Remember the Cant," and "CQB" (Season 1, Episodes 2-4)

Four episodes in this is a good show. (Confession: I watched episodes 3 and 4 online in advance). It's well written, decently paced, solidly acted and has some impressive special effects for cable TV. It's not only doing world building--it looks like it might have a world worth building.

The Expanse: "Dulcinea" (Season 1, Episode 1)

Wonder of wonders. SyFy has woken from the dead and is actually trying to be a science fiction channel again. Succeeding more than it fails, too, in tonight's premiere of The Expanse. The sci-fi feel is right, there's some legitimate world-building going on and enough decent visuals to triumph over the herky-jerky feel of cramming all that into an hour of television.

The Walking Dead: "Start to Finish" (Season 6, Episode 8)

A tower collapses on the walls that protect a community from a besieging horde of Walkers. It's pandemonium as the Walkers stream in. You wouldn't think boring would be the word to describe what happens next. And yet here we are.

Everybody just goes into their houses while the Walkers wander around. None of the living humans do much of anything interesting inside. The conflicts that have been set up to date dutifully play out in a manner lacking all inspiration. Then a stupidly cruel coda closes it out.
