THE IRON LADY: Margaret Thatcher R.I.P.

The world has lost a Conservative icon today, with the passing of Dame Margaret Thatcher, who died of a stroke at age 87.
 
Britain's first and, so far, only female Prime Minister, brought her country out of the doldrums of economic stagnation due to poor leadership.  Love her or hate her, Mrs. Thatcher changed the world.

Well, it's that time of the year again: the bean counters (or is that rice counters?) in North Korea are going through the books and taking note of the budget deficit, so the Exalted Leader has to go out and rattle his saber in order to get the rest of the sane world to pony up some hush money and help him meet his shortfall. When the Gross Domestic Product of your country is terror, this is what you do.

FAN FILM FRIDAY: Doctor Who--Silent Night

This is the kind of stuff my buddies and I would have loved to have been able to make when we were teenagers!  Alas, we had to content ourselves with overdubbing patched-together VHS tapes.  Ah, progress!
 
It's a little late for a Chistmas-themed Fan Film, but hey, when you're the Doctor, what's time got to do with it?

REMEDIAL SF 101: A Logic Named Joe

Way back in 1946, Murray Leinster, writing under his real name of Will F. Jenkins, published a short story in the March issue of Astounding Science Fiction which was eeriliy prescient in its description of a computer network which believes that "information should be free" and takes that premise to disturbing extremes.
 
The story was "A Logic Named Joe," and Leinster wrote it at a time when computers were still vast and cumbersome contrivances used for breaking enemy codes and crunching numbers.

Robot Combat League

Last year I reviewed for you a movie called Real Steel, very loosely based on a story by Richard Matheson. Both stories had one defining theme: boxing robots! Wouldn't it be cool if we had this in real life? Well, we do. It's called the Robot Combat League!
